Andrew Skurka のGreat Western Loopチャレンジ

Andrew Skurka がＰＣＴ(Pacific Crest Trail)、ＣＤＴ(Continental Divide Trail)を含むGWT（全6,875マイル）に挑戦しています。200日で終える予定です。詳しくはこちら。氏は去年、ＰＣＴのカリフォルニア区間1,700マイルを45日で踏破しています（一日平均38マイル）。5月19日にはTuolumne Meadowsにいたようです。

Yosemite : Art of an American Icon

ニュースを読んで、早速オークランドミュージアムに行ってきました。場所はダウンタウンの南東側、Laney CollegeとLake Merrittの間でした(Bartの"Lake Merritt"駅の近く)。入場料は大人$8。写真、油絵が主な展示品で、絵のいくつかは、かなり大きなものがありました。高さ１メートルほどのよく出来たHalf Domeのジオラマがあり、周りを何度もぐるぐる廻ってしまいました。個人的には1800年代の写真や油絵にかなり興味を引かれました。展示品を含む写真集『Yosemite: Art of an American Icon』(200ページ強)が販売されています。展示中の作品と共に、博物館職員や研究者の解説があり、かなり専門的で、読み応えのあるものとなっています。油絵に関してですが、写真集では、うまく色艶が出ていないように思われます。

ところですぐ横では、カリフォルニアの歴史に関する展が開催されており、1700年代のスペインの宣教活動、1800年中期のゴールドラッシュ、1800年後期の鉄道の発達などを含む多くの展示がなされていました。カリフォルニアが島となっていた1500年代のものを初めとする古地図もいくつかありました。また、1870年のヨセミテ観光のためのアクセスマップ(Groveland近くのChinese Campまで鉄道が来ていました)や、同じ頃の、鉄道会社が買収した土地を示す、内務省GLOによる州地図もあり、見たばかりの当時のヨセミテの絵や写真と関連させることができ、かなり興味を引かれました。

サンフランシスコ・クロニコル紙に「Valley lodgings sold out -- where to stay nearby（ヴァレーの宿泊施設は売り切れ?どこか近くに泊まる）」という記事が掲載されていました。

このなかにはTuolumne Meadows Lodge と White Wolf Lodgeは6月1日に営業を開始するとの記述があります。

キャンプ場の営業開始

Tamarack Flat、White Wolf Campground、Crane Flatのキャンプ場が25日から今シーズンの営業を開始しました。

蚊よけ製品比較

Backpacker誌6月号に、さまざまな蚊よけグッズの効き具合を比較する記事がありました。以下は簡単なまとめです。

比較は、200匹のメスの蚊が入ったタンクの中に、製品を塗った（装着した）腕を、ある時間おき(０分、10分、30分、以降30分おきに最大6時間まで)に3分間入れて、最初に刺されるまでの時間を比べたものです。1・2位は、DEET98%及び34%のスプレー、ローション製品が見事6時間をクリア。3位は40% lemon eucalyptus oil入りの液体が4時間、4・5・6位は30%DEET、15% IR3535、20% DEETのスプレー製品で共に3時間。7位は15% Picardinのスプレーが2時間でした。それ以下は次のとおりです。

8位 10% Picaridin スプレー　60分
9位　10% Citronella スプレー　30分以下
10位　5% Citronella + 2% geraniol　スプレー　30分以下
11位 20% Geraniol ローション　30分以下
12位　5% Citrinella スティック　30分以下

結局DEETがいちばん信頼できそうです。許容できる使用感から言って、30％が適当かと思われます。
注目の新成分はIR3535とPicaridinのようです。それ以外は、効き目の点からちょっと問題がありそうです。ちょうど手元にPicaridin　7%入り製品があったので腕にスプレーしてみました。消毒用のアルコールのような感じで、べたつきも臭いもありませんでした(まだ一度もフィールドで使ったことはありません)。

ハーフドーム登山の開始

ハーフドームの頂上部分のワイヤーケーブルが張られ、今シーズンの登山が開始されました。例年は10月の「コロンバス・デイ」祝日をもって、登山シーズンが終了となりワイヤーケーブルが外されます。

オークランド・ミュージアムでヨセミテ展

オークランドの「オークランド・ミュージアム」で5月19日〜8月26日、「Yosemite: Art of an American Icon」と題する企画展が行われています。19世紀、白人社会にヨセミテが知られていくきっかけとなった初期の西洋画家の作品や、このサイトでも紹介している日本人画家チウラ・オバタの作品（1920's〜）、またヨセミテのモノクローム写真で有名なアンセル・アダムスのプリントなど、合計150作品を集めており、見逃せない内容になっています。
加えて、いろいろな公開プログラムも予定されています。案内（PDF）はこちら。

Tioga Road

Tioga道路沿いの雪は、先週に比べかなり融けていました。好天が続けば、あと二週間ほどでなくなりそうな感じでした。雪線は方角、場所にもよりますが、10,000ft.といったところです。賑わっていたTH駐車場は、North Dome、Yosemite Falls等に向かうのに便利なPorcupine TH、Clouds Restへの玄関口であるSunrise TH(Clouds Restへのトレイルにはかなり雪があるように見えました。またTeneya Lakeの下流を渡れるかは不明です)、Tuolumne MeadowsのCathedral Lakes THでした。Lembert Domeの麓はかなり賑わっており、ドーム頂上に雪は見えませんでした。May Lakeへの道は依然閉じていました（車はTioga Road沿いに何台か駐車していました）が、White Wolfは開いていました。

南米チリの「トーレス・デル・パイネ国立公園」と姉妹公園提携

ヨセミテ国立公園は5月10日、チリの「Torres del Paine National Park（トーレス・デル・パイネ国立公園）」と姉妹国立公園提携の締結を行ったようです。今後、自然保護、職員研修、科学調査や環境教育など公園管理の全般において協力していくということです。

ヨセミテ国立公園は2006年5月に中国の「Huangshan National Park（黄山風景名勝区）」と姉妹公園提携を結んでいます。

Sister Parks Partnership between Torres del Paine and Yosemite
On May 10, a Sister Parks agreement was signed at the Chile's Foreign Ministry.

Representatives of Yosemite National Park and Chile's National Forest Corporation (CONAF) and Torres del Paine National Park signed on Thursday, May 10, a Sister Park agreement, promoting increased cooperation in the management of protected natural resources.

Chile's Foreign Affairs Ministry hosted the ceremony on Thursday, May 10, at 3:30 p.m. On behalf of the U.S. National Park Service, Yosemite Park Superintendent Michael Tollefson signed the accord. CONAF Executive Director Catalina Bau and CONAF's Magallanes Regional Director Juan José Romero signed for Chile. Chilean Minister of Agriculture Alvaro Rojas and U.S. Ambassador to Chile Craig Kelly witnessed to the accord.

The Yosemite and Torres del Paine partnership is the outcome of extensive collaboration between the U.S. National Park Service and CONAF. This partnership forms part of the framework of the U.S.-Chile Environmental Cooperation Agreement (June 2003).

Both National Parks have worked together promoting conservation, preservation of resources, park administration, and the management of cultural patrimony. The Sister Park agreement seeks to promote further cooperation, including information exchanges, personnel training, scientific research, visitor flow management, and education, among other issues.

The Torres del Paine and Yosemite National Parks are examples of scenic natural environments that United States and Chile wish to preserve. Although the two parks differ, they share common characteristics that bond them as partners. Refuges for unique animal and plant species, both parks have spectacular rock formations, extensive walking and climbing paths, and growing tourism as popular recreational sites. The two parks also face similar challenges and management concerns, such as limited resources, the pressures for development, endangered species, erosion of their pathways, and the impact of changing climate patterns.

The U.S. National Park Service has more than 30 Sister Park agreements between parks in the United States and counterparts worldwide. These partnerships have increased the exchange of information on successful practices and experiences. California's Yosemite Park has a similar agreement with the Huangshan National Park in China. 著者はLower Yosemite FallにてMoonbowが見られる条件として以下の６つを挙げています。

１．空がクリアなこと
２．大量の霧と飛沫が滝の落ち口に発生していること（この状態は4月から6月あるいは7月初旬）
３．空が暗いこと（太陽は地平線より最低9度以上沈んでいること）
４．月光が明るいこと（95％以上の満月、地平線より25度以上高い）
５．月光を遮るものがないこと（山や岩壁で遮られない）
６．幾何学的に虹の見える方向であること（Lower Yosemite Fall下の橋に西側の舗装されたエリアから虹を見るためには月光は42度に近い照射角度であること。）

高度8,000ft.以上の日当たりの悪いTioga Road道路沿いには、ところどころ雪が残っていました。
写真はOlmsted Pointから望むTeneya Lakeです(午後)。朝には湖面の1/3ほどに氷が張っており、気温も氷点下でした。Yosemite Creek Basinにはほとんど雪が見られませんでした。Yosemite Fallsの水が枯れるのは早いかもしれません。

乗馬ツアーの営業開始

今週末からヴァレーの乗馬プログラムが営業開始のようです。ワワナでは18日から、TMでは6月8日からの模様。

Wawona Stables will open on May 18th from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for two-hour rides and half-day rides beginning May 23rd. Tuolumne Meadows Staples will open June 8th for two-hour rides. Yosemite Valley Railroad

140号線でマーセド川に沿ってヨセミテに向かうと公園ゲート直前の小さな街がEl Portalです。
1907年から1945年までMercedからこのEl Portalまで鉄道「Yosemite Valley Railroad」が運行されていました。
El Portal には140号線から「El Portal Road」を北へ入っていったところに旧駅舎があり、いまは「The Yosemite Association」の事務所になっています。またその前には機関車、貨車が保存されています。

140号線では、マーセド川を挟んだ対岸にもとの線路跡（レールや枕木は取り外されている）をみることができ、2006年の崖崩れで通行止めとなり対岸に仮ルートが建設された部分も、もとの線路跡を利用していることになります。

タイオガロード開通 (May 11)

いよいよタイオガロードが夏シーズンの開通となりました。Tuolumne Meadowsのガスステーションは24時間営業（無人・クレジットカード）でオープンしていますが、売店やグリル等は未だ、また沿線のキャンプ場等の営業も未だですので、ご注意ください。

Services along the Tioga Road and in Tuolumne Meadows will be limited. The Tuolumne Meadows gas station will be open 24-hours a day for credit card use. The Tuolumne Meadows Store, Grill, and the Tuolumne Lodge are not currently open. All campgrounds along the Tioga Road corridor (including White Wolf, Tamarack Flat, Yosemite Creek, and Porcupine Flat) and the Tuolumne Meadows Campground will remain closed until further notice.

Hikers and backcountry users should be aware that many area trails are still covered in snow which may make route finding difficult. Additionally, hikers should be prepared for high water, which may make stream crossings difficult or impossible.

Although most of the snow has melted on the meadows, visitors are urged to avoid walking over meadows as increased water content has made them extremely fragile and subject to damage.

Current road and weather conditions are available 24 hours a day by calling 209/372-0200 or on the website at www.nps.gov/yose. Information about backcountry camping and trail conditions can be found on the website or by calling the Wilderness Office at 209/372-0745. (-NPS-)

　入園料は国立公園のゲートでレンジャーから徴収されます。国立公園の管理運営に必要な経費です。にっこり払いましょうね。
　支払いと引き替えにもらうレシート（もしくはパス）は、帰路ゲート出場時にチェックされることがあるので、紛失しないようにしましょう。
　またゲートは24時間オープンしていますが、夜間にはレンジャーが不在となります。その場合の入場料はビジターセンターにて支払うか、帰路ゲート出場時に支払います。

YAの新CEO

YOSEMITE ASSOCIATIONのCEOは、昨年交通事故でSteven P. Medley氏が亡くなられて不在となっていましたが、後任には現在Northern California Water AssociationのExecutive DirectorであるDavid J. Guy氏の就任が決まったようです。

YOSEMITE ASSOCIATION APPOINTS NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
David J. Guy to fill leadership post of award winning non-profit supporting Yosemite National Park since 1923

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, May 3, 2007 -- David J. Guy has been named Chief Executive Officer of Yosemite Association (YA), the 84-year old non-profit organization supporting and promoting education, research and environmental programs in Yosemite National Park. The association’s 16-member board of trustees unanimously selected Guy for the position.

An avid parks supporter, David Guy and his family have visited more than 100 units in the national park system over the past decade. That enthusiasm will shape his work as head of Yosemite Association, where his duties include strategic planning, building partnerships, marketing, product development and fundraising. Guy will work to increase the membership base and continue relationship building with Yosemite supporters and park visitors. He will supervise a permanent staff of 16, plus 25-35 summer seasonal employees.

David Guy replaces former Yosemite Association President Steven Medley, who led the organization for 21 years before passing away in an October 2006 solo automobile accident. Yosemite Association Board Chair Christy Holloway says Guy is a “dynamic, entrepreneurial leader” who will honor and build upon Medley’s legacy as he carries out the YA mission.

“David’s skills, experience and vision for Yosemite Association give us confidence that he will lead the organization successfully in this time of great change and opportunity,” says Holloway. “He is an accomplished leader who, in the past, has elevated organizational profiles, grown membership numbers and expanded services and influence in challenging political environments.”

Guy comes to YA from the Northern California Water Association, where he was Executive Director for eight years. In this position, he forged strategic partnerships with federal and state agencies, led and developed an integrated regional water management plan for the Sacramento Valley, oversaw communications and educational outreach, and directed administrative improvements throughout the organization. Governors Schwarzenegger, Davis and Wilson each appointed Guy to water and agricultural task forces, and he is an author and frequent lecturer on issues related to water, resource management and land use. For the previous nine years, Guy was a water and environmental attorney in Sacramento.

Established in 1923, the Yosemite Association was the nation’s first cooperating association in our national parks and serves as a benchmark for similar organizations nationwide. In collaboration with the National Park Service and authorized by Congress, YA supports interpretive, educational, research, scientific and environmental programs in Yosemite National Park through publishing, retail sales, seminars, visitor services, volunteer programs and other outreach. Each year the popular Yosemite Association Outdoor Adventures courses offer a wide variety of in-depth classes and outdoor experiences from Yosemite’s natural and human history to backpacking, photography and writing.

“We are very excited to be working with David Guy in his new capacity as CEO of the Yosemite Association,” stated Yosemite National Park Superintendent Mike Tollefson. “The Yosemite Association provides services and financial support that promote Park stewardship and enrich the visitor experience. We are proud to have them as one of our primary park partners.”

In the past decade, YA has donated over $4 million in programs, services and direct financial support to Yosemite. Examples of YA’s recent contributions to the park include: protecting Yosemite’s bears through the purchase of bearproof food canisters rented to backpackers for only $5 per trip; providing more than 10,000 hours of volunteer labor for visitor information services and habitat restoration; operating the wilderness information center and wilderness permit reservation system; publishing award-winning books such as the Illustrated Flora of Yosemite National Park and Two Bear Cubs; and reintroduction and expansion of the YA student intern program with UC Merced.

David Guy, his wife and three children will be relocating to the Yosemite area. He will formally take office at the Association’s headquarters in El Portal on June 25. (c. Boire - 5/03/07)

グレイシャーポイント・ロード状況

道路上の除雪作業が終わり、NPSほか関係車両の通行が始まったようです。一般車両の通行には道路補修や倒木の除去作業、駐車スペースの除雪等などの作業が終わった後になります。
