[4.1] Holt-Atherton Special Collections

ベイエリアから車で東に一時間ほどのところにStocktonという町があります。そこにあるUniversity of the Pacificには、Holt-Atherton Special Collectionsという資料室があり、現存するJohn Muir関連資料の75％が保存されているそうです。つい先日そこを訪問してきました。

図書館の地下にあるこぢんまりとした一角が、Holt-Atherton Special Collectionsと呼ばれていました。10時ちょうどに行くと、相手をしてくれるSutton氏に、ばったり入り口前で出会いました。入り口横（写真上）にはMuir関連の展示品があります。ドアを開け中に入ると、やや広めの受付室（写真下）になっており、その奥が資料閲覧室となっていました。大きなワークデスクがいくつかあり、Muirの蔵書を入れた本棚や、友達だった画家のKeithの描いた油絵（Vernal FallとLiberty Cap）がありました（あまりうまい絵とは思えませんでした、Sutton氏によるとMuirが最大の購入者だったとのこと）。

資料室の一般的な説明をしていただいた後、Sutton氏はいくつかの宝物を持ってきてくれました。
先ずは、ルーズベルト大統領がMuirに出した手紙でした（1903年）。ぜひ自分のヨセミテ旅行に同伴してくれるようにと要請した手紙で、確かに　”I do not want anyone with me but you, and I want to drop politics absolutely for four days, and just be out in the open with you.…”とタイプで書いてあり、最後にはサインがしてありました（R. U. Johnsonの自伝によると、JohnsonがTRに紹介したとのこと）。消印は当然ワシントンでしたが、あて先はUC Berkeleyの学長気付けのMuir宛となっていました。　あとはMuirの写った写真や、アラスカで書いたジャーナルのひとつを見せていただきました。本で読んで知っていても、やはり現実に見るとかなり感動しました。またアラスカJournalに描かれていたスケッチのうまさにはびっくりでした。途中John Muirの２５セントコインの話になり、まだ見つけてないんだよと話したら、なんとコインを持ってきてくれ、あげるよとのこと。大感謝！

その後Wurtz氏から、資料を依頼するときの書類の書き方、マイクロフィルム読み取り機械の使い方を教わりました。早速、1872年と73年のジャーナルのマイクロフィルムを頼み眺め始めました。字はかなり読みづらかったでしたが、日付、山の単語、スケッチになど助けられ、”なんとなくわかった気分”になりました。そのうち、「こんなのもあるよ」と、自筆をタイプ変換した資料を持ってきてくれました。これまで見たことの無い資料（Wolfeの「John of the Mountains」に掲載されていない）をいくつか見つけ、早速コピー依頼。これで、1873年夏の空白部（Mt. Lyell登山とMerced山群での行動）がうまり、また1872年秋の氷河移動の測定大ルート（Mt. Hoffmann−Tuolumne Canyon−Mt. Lyell）の仮説もほぼ検証できました。

帰り間際に「これはどう？」と別の箱を持ってきてくれました。ファイルのひとつには、なんと1869年夏の日記のタイプ版が収まっていました。これこそ後年（1911年）出版された、「My First Summeｒ in The Sierra」のもととなった日記です。早速、Cathedral Peakを登った日の記述をチェック、「My First Summer in The Sierra」とはかなり書風が違うことを確認。全100ページほどあり、コピーを待つ時間が無かったので、後に自宅に送ってもらうように頼んで帰途に着きました。ちなみにこの1869年の夏の日記は紛失しており、所在は知れないそうです。当然マイクロフイルムもありません。

というわけで、あっという間の2時間半でした。また幾度か訪ねることになりそうです。 「My First Summer in The Sierra」と1869年のジャーナルの食い違いについては、そのうち報告したいと思います。

[4.2] 「Sierra Journal」 vs. 「My First Summer in the Sierra」

"There is another rock, more striking in form than this, standing isolated at the head of the lake, but it is not more than half as high. It is a knob or knot of burnished granite. perhaps about a thousand feet high, apparently as flawless and strong in structure as a wave-worn pebble, and probably ows its existence to the superior resistance it offered to the action of the overflowing ice-flood." John Muir 「My First Summer in The Sierra」, August 8th 1869*

1869年夏のジャーナルのコピーが届きました。以下はざっと読んだまとめです。

タイトルは”Sierra Journal,　Summer of 1869　Volume 3”です。全142ページで、7月28日から9月22日までをカバーしています。途中の5ページ(7月28日の後半から7月31日の前半の部分)が抜けています。最後のページは、各スケッチの簡単なタイトルとそのページが列記されています。これはタイプを打った人が添付したものと思われます。スケッチに相当する部分には、タイプはなく空白になっており、原書に忠実になるように作成したように思われます。残念ながらスケッチは一枚もありません。空白（スケッチ）総数は40を越えています。ジャーナルのかなりの文がそのまま使われており、Frederick Turnerが、「John Muir：Rediscovering America」で書いているように、「My First Summer in the Sierra」（以下”MFS”と略）が、このジャーナルに基づいて書かれたことがうなずけます。細かい違いや気づいた点をいくつか列記すると：

1． 8月上旬：インスピレーションを感じ、Prof. Butlerに会いにIndian Canyonを下った話はほぼ同じです。
2． 8月8日：MuiｒはPolly Domeに登りますが、その裾野のところを次のように書いています”and　climbed the mountained rock which dips its westerned slopes beneath the waters of the lake.”　もちろんこの部分は、現在Tioga Roadが水際を走っています。Tenaya Lakeのスケッチをしたとも書いてありますが、確かにそのページには空白があります。
3．8月9日：Muirは先行しTuolumne Meadowsに入ります。そこで数時間過ごした（After enjoying the new wilderness a few hours）後、戻ってきたと書かれています。
4． 8月12日：BillyはDelaneyによって解雇された（he was discharged）と書かれています。
5． Mono Lake方面に行った間の日記は、やはり抜けています。
6． 9月2日：この日の日記は、MFSの同日の日記とほぼ同じです。1869年10月3日、MuirはCarr宛に手紙をだし、9月2日の日記を引用しています（「Letters to a Friend」に原文あり）。その内容はこれらとかなり違っています（山の名前もDanaではなくTiger Peakとなっています）。謎の引用です。
7． MFSと同様に、Dana、Lyell、Mammoth Mountain(Peak)、Cathedralなどの山の名前が正確に使われています。9月8日はいくつかの知らない山を登ったと書いているので、WolfeやWilkinsが書いているように、このときMt. Lyell登ったという説は間違っていると思われます。
8． 9月7日はMuirがCathedral Peakを初登頂したとされている日です。MFSでは、”up to its topmost spire, which I reached at noon”と書いています。「Sierra Journal」では、”up to the base of its topmost spires which I reached at noon”と書かれています。続く”The view from the Cathedral Spires...”の部分は同じです。MFSには無く重要な文は、”…and up its spires and at the highest point ate my luncheon. But so high and giddy is the sheer precipitous front I found I could not swallow the bread whole looking down.”です。尖峰の上で昼食をとったと書いています。
9． 9月22日：結びの部分がぬけていて、”The Range of Light”を書いていたのかどうかはわかりません。　
10． MFSのように氷河の記述があるので、Muirが氷河のアイデアをもったのは1869年と言えそうです。
11． 同様に、羊による自然破壊をすでに述べています。

* 8月8日、Polly Domeから見たPywiack Domeを表現した文。おそらく写真のような風景も見たと思われます。

[4.3] Journal of the ”First Summer”

Steven J. Holmesの「The Young John Muir: An Environmental Biography」は、ヨセミテ生活時代及びそれ以前の手紙などを詳細に検証し、正確なMuir像を描き直そうとしています（筆者の言葉を借りれば”Reimaging Muir, Remapping Biography”となります）。その中では「The Story of My Boyhood and Youth」、「A Thousand-Mile Walk to the Gulf」、「My First Summer in the Sierra」及びBadeやWolfeによるナレーションをそのまま資料として使う危険性を指摘しています。ところで「My First Summer in the Sierra」には(Muir研究者の間では知られている)、原本となった「Sierra Journal」（1887年）と言う手書きのジャーナルがあるそうです[註]。そしてHolmesは、巻末のAppendix A：「Journal of the ”First Summer”」で、Turner、Cohenも含み、これまでのMuirについて書いた本が、この「Sierra Journal」」の資料としての信憑性を深く検証していなかったこと、もしくはWilkinsらのようにMy First Summerをそのまま資料として使っている研究があることを指摘し、次の三点から深い資料検証を行っています：

[1]「Sierra Journal」の内部構成や内容の非一貫性、
[2]「Sierra Journal」と、同じ頃書かれた別のジャーナルとの書き方の違い、
[3]そして「Sierra Journal」と、1869年前後に書かれ現存しているジャーナルとの書き方の違い。

検証部はかなり長いので省き、結論をまとめると、1887年の「Sierra Journal」は1869年の夏のジャーナルの直接の書き写しではなく、かなり修正が加わっている。よってMuirが当時見たり、感じたりしたことを知る信頼できるソースではない。しかしながら、大まかな場所や自然の対象物に関する記述は信じられるであろうとしています。

以下はHolmesによる結論です。

”Thus, a critical evaluation of the 1887 notebooks suggests that they are not a straightforward copy of the original journal, but are already subsutantially revised with an eye toward publication. Accordingly, we cannot take the account found in these notebooks as reliable evidence of what Muir experienced - what he thought, felt, imagined, hoped, dreamed, or feared - in Yosemite during the summer of 1869. However, if my analysis of the general patterns of his 1887 process of revision is correct, we can take these 1887 notebooks as a fairly reliable guide to the sheer facts of the places and natural objects that Muir encountered that summer.”　Stephen J. 参考として、冒頭部だけですが、すべての全文が残る9月2日のエントリーを挙げておきます。

1869年10月3日、MuirがCarrに宛てて書いた手紙で引用した9月2日の日記：
”Sept. 2nd. Amount of cloudness .08. Sky red evening and morning, not usual crimson glow but separate clouds colored and anchored in dense massive mountain forms. One red, bluffy cap is placed upon Castle Peak and its companion to the south, but the smooth cone tower of the castle is seen perring out over the top. …”

「Sierra Journal」（1887年）より：
”Sep 2 This has been a grand red rosy Crimson day. What it means I don't know, but it is the first change from tranquil sunshine with purple evenings & dawns & still white moones. There was nothing however like a storm. …”

「My First Summer in the Sierra」（1911年）より：
”September 2. ?A grand, red, rosy, crimson day, ?a perfect glory of a day. What it means I don't know. It is the first marked change from tranquil sunshine with purple mornings and evenings and still, white noons. There is nothing like a storm, however. …”

[註]昨年「Sierra Journal」vs.「My First Summer in the Sierra」と言う記事を書き、「1869年のジャーナルのタイプ」とぬか喜びをしてしまいましたが、これは「1887年のジャーナル」と言うことになります。お詫びして訂正させていただきます。

1865年よりMuirはJeanne Carrと文通を始め、多くがヨセミテ渓谷在住時代にやりとりされました。この本は、それらの手紙を集め解説したものです。Muir本人は著作の中でJ. Carrに直接触れていませんが、彼女はMuirの生涯に大きな影響を及ぼしました。Muirが書いた手紙は没後Badeによって編纂され、”The Life and Letters of John Muir”として、1923年に出版されました。その多くはMuirからCarr宛に書いたものです。”The Life and Letters ”はMuir関連本にとっての一次資料であり、現在では再版本(”John Muir: His Life and Letters and Other Writings” by John Muir, Terry Gifford編纂)のみならず、オンライン化もされ、手軽に閲覧できるようになっています。しかしながら、CarrがMuirに宛てて書いたものは、限られた研究者のみが閲覧（現在はHolt-Athertonが保管）できるだけでした。この本は、二人の手紙に興味のある方にとっては、必読の本です。

個人的に興味を引かれた手紙や解説をいくつかあげると：
-インディアナポリスでMuirが目を負傷したときに、ヨセミテ渓谷の記事を友達に読んでもらいなさいとアドバイスした手紙（1867年4月15日）。[註]本人は、前の年に読んだと返信しています。
-George Perkins Marshと会ったことを示唆するMuir宛の手紙（1871年12月31日）。[註]1864年に書かれたMarshの本、”Man and Nature”は、当時の森林破壊を憂える人々にとってバイブルのようなもので、Muirが”God's First Temples”を書く前（1876年）に、この本を読んだ可能性が十分考えられます。Sargent、Pinchotらはこの本に大きな影響を受けています。
-1905年、Carrに書いた手紙が雑誌編集員(George W. James)の手に入って公表されそうになり、Muirが必死になって一部を削除しようとしたことの詳しい解説。
-上と絡み、MuirとElvira Hutchingsとの恋愛(不倫)噂に関する論議への解説。[註]J.CarrやYelvertonと共にMuirの恋愛話は、いくつものMuir関連本のネタとなっています（参考文献：Frank E. Buske, 「An Episode in The Yosemite: "To Love is Painful"」、The John Muir Newsletters, Vol. 7. Number 2, Spring 1997）。
-Muir、Keith、Kelloggらと共に、Tuolumne渓谷を遡行したときのことを、夫(E. Carr)に報告した手紙（1873年7月11日）。
-上の手紙に絡み、Muirが直径4ｆｔ.・高さ80ft.の木を切り倒して、Tuolumne Riverに渡渉用の橋を架けようとしたこと。[註]ヨセミテ国立公園設立直前の1890年9月上旬、反対派のJ. P Irishは、Oakland Tribune紙上で、昔MuirがHutchingsのホテルで働いているときに、立ち木を切ったと糾弾しました。Muirは一度もヨセミテで木を切ったことはないと返答しました”I never cut down a single tree in the Yosemite…”。
-Louie Strentzelに宛ててMuirを紹介した手紙（1873年10月29日）。
-J. CaｒｒによるTuolumne Meadows・Shadow Lakeなどでのスケッチ。

[4.5] WhitneyはMuirをShepherd(羊飼い)と呼んだのか？

2006-01-09

”A more absurd theory was never advanced than that by which it was sought to ascribe to glaciers the sawing out of these vertical walls and the rounding of the domes. Nothing more unlike the real work of ice, as exhibited in the Alps, could be found. Besides, there is no reason to suppose, or at least no proof, that glaciers have ever occupied the Valley, or any portion of it, as will be explained in tile next chapter, so that this theory, based on entire ignorance of the whole subject, may be dropped without wasting any more time upon it. ”　−Josiah D. Whitney 「The Yosemite Guide-Book」(1870)より

California Geological SurveyのWhitneyが、ヨセミテ渓谷の氷河形成説を唱えるMuirを「Sheepherder」や「Shepherd」（羊飼い）と呼んだという話は、いろいろな本で取り上げられています。本によってはかなりセンセーショナルに書かれているこの話の出所を、少し調べてみました。

Muirに関する最初の伝記ともいえる「The Life and Letters of John Muir」(1923)を編纂したBadeは、その9章で、「The scorn with which Whitney and his assistants rejected Muir's theory and observations as those of a "shepherd" had not the slightest discouraging effect upon him…」と書いています。次にWolfeは、そのピューリッツアー賞受賞作「Son of the Wilderness」(1945)の中で、「...calling him "that shepherd," "a mere sheepherder.""an ignoramus," and the like.」と書いています。1950年、Muirの「Studies in The Sierra」復刻版に前書きを寄せたBill Colbyは、「He referred to Muir as a "sheepherder" and "guide."」と書いています。しかし、残念ながら3人とも話の引用元を示していません。シエラネバダの歴史解説本「History of the Sierra Nevada」(1965)を書いたFrancis P. Farquhar[註1]は、その”John Muir and Range of Light”の章で、「Muir was called a sheepherder, an ignoramus.」と引用し、「The Yosemite Guide-Book」(1869)を資料にしています。Shirley Sargentの「John Muir inYosemite」(1971)は、上記の一節を「The Yosemite Guide-Book」(1869)より引用しているのみです。Cohenは「The Pathless Way」(1984)のなかで、Farquharの本を参考にして「…Whitney, who simply dismissed Muir as sheepherder」と書いています。Stephen Foxの「The American Conservation Movement: John Muir and His Legacy」(1980)は「Whitney spurned the theories of "that sheperd"」と書き、Thurman Wilkinsの”Clarence King”を引用しています。しかしWilkinsは、著書「Clarence King」（1958）の中で、「John Muir, "that shepherd." as Whitney called him...」と書いているものの、資料は全く示していません。Frederick Turnerは「John Muir:Rediscovering America」（1985)の中で、”mere sheepherder”や”ignoramus”と言う表現を使っているものの、特にWhitneyが言ったとは書いていません。「The Geomorphic Evolution of the Yosemite Valley and Sierra Nevada Landscapes」（1997）を書いたJeffrey P. Schafferは、「In his 1869 Yosemite Guide Book, Whitney called Muir "a mere sheepherder, an ignoramus."」と引用し、「The Yosemite Guide-Book」(1869)の中で、Whitenyが書いたとしています。Bill Guytonは「Glaciers of California」(1998)の中で、 「Whitney wrote harshly and condescendingly about him, calling him "ignorant sheepherder"with "absurd" ideas among other things.」 と書いていますが、その引用元は示していません。

確かにWhitneyは、「The Yosemite Book」(1869)や「The Yosemite Guide-Book」(1870,1871)の三冊の中で、”absurd”や”an ignorance”という語を含む一節（上で引用）を使っています。しかし、それらはBlakeもしくはもしくはClarence Kingに対して向けられたものです。そして、”ignoramus”、”sheepherder”、”shepherd”といった単語は、本のどこを読んでも使われていず、Whitneyが本でそう「書いた」という説は間違いのようです[註2]。では、そう「話した」のでしょうか？残念ながらBade、Colby、Wolfeの誰一人として確実な資料を提示しておらず、判断がつきかねる状況です。ともあれ、この三人の記述が以降の逸話形成のソースのようです。

[註1]Colby、Bade、そしてFarquharは共にシエラクラブの会長を務めています(Colbyは2代目で1917-1919、Badeは3代目で1919-1922、Farquharは1933-1935、1948-1949の間任期)。
[註2]FarquharやSchafferの引用する「The Yosemite Guide-Book」(1869)は実際に見たことはありません。しかし上記の一節が、「The Yosemite Book」（1869）、普及版「The Yosemite Guide-Book」（1870，1871）の三冊で同様に使われていることや、1869年のMuirの行動、MuirがWhitneyの説に疑問を抱いた年が1870年4月13日（Caｒｒにその考えを手紙で伝えた）であることを考えれば、この本だけがMuirについて特別な記述をしている可能性はないと思われます。「The Yosemite Book」の各版に関してはOctavo版の前書きで、Snyderがまとめています。

[4.6] The Range of Light

"Then it seemed to me the Sierra should be called, not the Nevada or Snowy Range, but the Range of Light." John Muir

「Sierra Nevada」[英訳：The Snowy (Mountain) Range]という単語は、1776年、サンフランシスコ湾付近から、その山々を遠望したスペインの伝道師Pedro Fontによって、初めて地図に記されました。1890年、MuirはCentury誌に投稿した記事「The Treasures of The Yosemite」（8月号）の中で、自分にとっては「Sierra Navada」は「Snowy Range」ではなく「The Range of Light」と呼ぶべきだと書きました：Then it seemed to me the Sierra should be called, not the Nevada or Snowy Range, but the Range of Light[1]。 「The Range of Light」がMuirによる造語なのかどうかは定かではありませんが、このフレーズは、その後のMuirの著書「The Mountains of California」（1894年）、および「The Yosemite」（1912年）でも使われています[2][3]。本人によれば、「The Range of Light」という表現は、初めてヨセミテを訪れた1868年に、San Joseの南東Pacheco Pass(CA152号上)からSierra Nevadaを望んだときに思いついたと説明しています[註]。また1911年に出版された「My First Summer in the Sierra」[4]では、「The Range of Light」を使い、結びとしています：Here ends my forever memorable first High Sierra excursion. I have crossed the Range of Light, surely the brightest and best of all the Load has built; and rejoicing in its glory, I gladly, gratefully, hopefully pray I may see it again.　「The Range of Light」はもはや「Sierra Nevada」の代名詞です。ハイシエラで時を過ごすことにより、誰もが「The Range of Light」の表現のもつ奥深さを感じ取れることでしょう。

[1] The Tresures of The Yosemite(1890):
One shining morning, at the head of the Pacheco Pass, a landscape was displayed that after all my wanderings still appears as the most divinely beautiful and sublime I have ever beheld. There at my feet lay the great central plain of California, level as a lake thirty or forty miles wide, four hundred long, one rich furred bed of golden Compositae. And along the eastern shore of this lake of gold rose the mighty Sierra, miles in height, in massive, tranquil grandeur, so gloriously colored and so radiant that it seemed not clothed with light, but wholly composed of it, like the wall of some celestial city. Along the top, and extending a good way down, was a rich pearl-gray belt of snow; then a belt of blue and dark purple, marking the extension of the forests; and stretching along the base of the range a broad belt of rose-purple, where lay the miners’ gold and the open foothill gardens?all the colors smoothly blending, making a wall of light clear as crystal and ineffably fine, yet firm as adamant. Then it seemed to me the Sierra should be called, not the Nevada or Snowy Range, but the Range of Light. And after ten years in the midst of it, rejoicing and wondering, seeing the glorious floods of light that fill it,?the sunbursts of morning among the mountain-peaks, the broad noonday radiance on the crystal rocks, the flush of the alpenglow, and the thousand dashing waterfalls with their marvelous abundance of irised spray,?it still seems to me a range of light. But no terrestrial beauty may endure forever. The glory of wildness has already departed from the great central plain. Its bloom is shed, and so in part is the bloom of the mountains. In Yosemite, even under the protection of the Government, all that is perishable is vanishing apace.

[2] The Mountains of California(1894):　
When I first enjoyed this superb view, one glowing April day, from the summit of the Pacheco Pass, the Central Valley, but little trampled or plowed as yet, was one furred, rich sheet of golden compositae, and the luminous wall of the mountains shone in all its glory. Then it seemed to me the Sierra should be called not the Nevada, or Snowy Range, but the Range of Light. And after ten years spent in the heart of it, rejoicing and wondering, bathing in its glorious floods of light, seeing the sunbursts of morning among the icy peaks, the noonday radiance on the trees and rocks and snow, the flush of the alpenglow, and a thousand dashing waterfalls with their marvelous abundance of irised spray, it still seems to me above all others the Range of Light, the most divinely beautiful of all the mountain-chains I have ever seen.

[3] The Yosemite(1912):
Looking eastward from the summit of the Pacheco Pass one shining morning, a landscape was displayed that after all my wanderings still appears as the most beautiful I have ever beheld. At my feet lay the Great Central Valley of California, level and flowery, like a lake of pure sunshine, forty or fifty miles wide, five hundred miles long, one rich furred garden of yellow Compositoe. And from the eastern boundary of this vast golden flower-bed rose the mighty Sierra, miles in height, and so gloriously colored and so radiant, it seemed not clothed with light, but wholly composed of it, like the wall of some celestial city. Along the top and extending a good way down, was a rich pearl-gray belt of snow; below it a belt of blue and lark purple, marking the extension of the forests; and stretching long the base of the range a broad belt of rose-purple; all these colors, from the blue sky to the yellow valley smoothly blending as they do in a rainbow, making a wall of light ineffably fine. Then it seemed to me that the Sierra should be called, not the Nevada or Snowy Range, but the Range of Light. And after ten years of wandering and wondering in the heart of it, rejoicing in its glorious floods of light, the white beams of the morning streaming through the passes, the noonday radiance on the crystal rocks, the flush of the alpenglow, and the irised spray of countless waterfalls, it still seems above all others the Range of Light.

[註] Muirの最初のヨセミテ旅行（1868年）の記録は、Bade編のMuirの手紙集のVI章に引用されています。それにはPacheco Passからの記述はあるものの、「The Range of Light」という表現は使われていません。したがって、実際には文を書く都合上、「The Range of Light」を1868年に思いついた風に書いたと考えるのが妥当だと思われます。

[4.7] Muirの出版数

その生涯に数多くの著作・出版を残したJohn Muirですが、どのようなペースで著作を行ったのでしょうか。グラフを作成してみました。横軸は年度、縦軸は著作数です。その総数は330+ほどですが、簡単なビラや新聞のコラムのようなものも、かなり含まれています。最初に出版されたのは”The Calypso Borealis”(1866)。その後、ヨセミテ渓谷に住むようになってから、著作が増えていきます。主なテーマは氷河、探検に関する雑誌投稿です。ヨセミテを去った74年からは、新聞のコラム記事が多くなってきますが、結婚後1881年のピークを境に、著作数が落ち始めます。この間もアラスカ、シエラネバダ、ユタでの探検のことが主に書かれています。自然保護に関するものは、76年の”God's First Temples”を含め数本しかありません。果樹園の仕事から解放される1888年付近から90年代前半にかけても、意外なことに自然保護を訴える著作はあまり見受けられません（1890年の有名な二作に注意）。1890年代後半になって森林保護に関する著作が見え出します。1900年代に入ってからは、海外への長期旅行が増えたため、著作量がかなり減る年もあるようです。そして、1900年代後半（特に1909年）には、Hetch-Hetchy関連でかなりの数（量は少ない）を出版しています。

[4.8] John Muir and the Sierra Club

Hetchy−Hetchy論争に代表される初期のヨセミテの自然保護の話になると、MuirとSierra Club(シエラクラブ)を避けて通ることはできません。Holway R. Jonesによる”John Muir and the Sierra Club： The Battle for Yosemite”(1965年)は、Sierra Clubの正史（1913年以前）ともいうべき本です。出版のきっかけは、Jonesが書いた修士論文”The History of the Sierra Club”がクラブの興味を引いたことから始まります。その資料室の使用や、歴代の会長ColbyやFarquharの直接協力なども得て、Muir、Johnson、Colbyを始めとする当時の中心人物の書簡や、ワシントンでの連邦資料などに基づき、この本は書きあげられました。設立時の全メンバー名、風刺画、反対パンフレットの数々、ダム化以前及び以降のHetch−Hetchy渓谷の貴重な写真（意図的に修正を加えたダム賛成派の宣伝写真などもあります）も含まれており、資料価値をさらに高めています。

第１章は”The Founding of the Sierra Club”と題し、シエラクラブが創立されたときの話と、最初の二つの運動：Caminetti案（できたばかりのYosemite国立公園を縮小する案）への反対、及びForest Reserve（森林保安区）を守るための支援運動について調べられています。2章ではクラブ創設(1892年)以前にさかのぼり、ヨセミテ渓谷がカリフォルニアの州立公園になった時(1864年)と、ヨセミテ国立公園が成立された時(1890年)のことがまとめられています。3章では、ヨセミテ渓谷を国立公園に編入(1906年)するために行ったMuirやクラブの運動が、そして4〜6章（本のほぼ半分）を割いて、Hetchy-Hetchy渓谷のダム化反対運動について書かれています。

次の三点がどう書かれているかが気になりました：(1)Muirが国立公園成立時に果たした役割、(2)ヨセミテ渓谷を国立公園に編入するための運動、(3)Sierra Clubによるダム化案への対案ともいえるColby Brief[註1]。(1)では、通説どおり、Vandeverらとの関係は無かったとし[註2]、Muirの貢献は雑誌記事を書いた程度となっています。(2)に関しては、かなり詳しく書かれています。そして、Colbyの果たした役割がかなり重要だったことがわかります。MuirにHarrimanへの助力を求めるようにアドバイスをしたのもColbyだったそうです。JohnsonはNYでHarrimanの秘書から電話を受け、Harrimanが関係者に協力させるよう指示を出したと、Muirに報告の手紙（1906年1月17日）を出しています。(3)は、Hetch-Hetchy渓谷まで道路を敷き、そこにヨセミテ渓谷のような宿泊施設を作り、夏冬使える観光や周辺へのハイキングなどの基地とする案です。ダム化は反対するものの、観光施設のためのHetch-Hetchy渓谷の開発は容認するもので、当時のMuir・Sierra Clubの「保護」の考え方がわかる興味深い文書です。
かなり面白い本ですが、残念なことに絶版となっています（古本で入手となります）。そのうち詳しい要約を書きたいと思います。

[註1] 正式名：”Brief of Sierra Club in Opposition to Grant of Hetch Hetchy Valley to San Franciscofor a Water Supply”
[註2] Johnsonは下院公地委員会で、Vandever案で提案された公園の境界を、Muirの推薦する境界（手紙でJohnsonに送った地図）に拡大するよう主張しました。Vandeverの案は、最終的にはSouther Pacific RailwayのZumwaltのロビー活動により、さらに広大なものとなります。VandeverはCentury誌(Johnson)との関連を否定しており、その意味ではJohnsonの貢献度はかなり曖昧です。Jonesの本が書かれた1965年には、Zumwultのロビー活動に関しては誰も指摘していません。

[4.9] 東良三（あずま　りょうぞう）とMuir

西村さんから、「東良三」の書いた”アラスカ：最後のフロンティア”（山と渓谷社）のあとがきの部分を送っていただきました。それによると、1910年（明治43年）、東は、ワシントン州Tacoma付近のミッション系大学Puget Sound Collegeに入学しました。やがて、Mt. Rainierに登るチャンスが来、その途中、キャンプMuirという場所（洞穴）で一夜を過ごすことになりました。東はそのとき初めてMuirの存在を知り、これをきっかけにMuirの著書を買い集め、読み始めます。やがて東はMuirにMartinezを尋ねたい旨を書き送ると、快諾の返信が届きました。

「そして私は、1914年、卒業前の夏期休暇にタコマから遠くサンフランシスコまで一日半の汽車の旅をつづけ、さらに金門湾から75キロも北方のマルティネッという農村まで馬車にゆられて、あたかも最後の著となった『アラスカ氷河探検記』の執筆に余念のなかった老先輩ミュアを、果樹園にかこまれた広大な私邸に訪ねたのでした。私はときに二十五歳のとるにたらぬ一苦学生。五十も年長の偉人との出会いは、とても釣りあいのとれぬ妙なコントラストだったといえましょう。しかし、遠路を訪ねてきた日本人ということで、こころよく迎え入れてくださった老師の純白の長いひげを見たとき、あたかもいにしえの聖人のような気高さを感じました。そしてしっかと私の小さな手を握ってくださった掌の暖かさ。私は思わず師の脚下にひざまづいて、うやうやしく頭をさげました。私のミュア邸逗留は二日一晩にすぎませんでしたが、この高名な大自然人の知遇を得たことは、その後の私の生涯に、直接間接に大きな影響をあたえずにおきませんでした。」（265ページより）

西村さんの資料をEber氏に送ると、こんどは氏の方から、Sierra Club Bulletinの写しが送られてきました。ほんの一部だけですが、それによると：
1973年、Kimes夫妻が、Muir関連の資料を調べていたとき、Mr. IshigakiがMuir家に本の翻訳の許可を申し出ていたことがわかります。その追伸から、1942年に”Travels in Alaska”の翻訳がなされていたことがわかります。その本を探すため、Muirの伝記を書いた東に問い合わせると、”Travels in Alaska”は、東から（間接的に）本を借りた戸伏により翻訳されたことがわかりました。東はやがて米国を訪れ、Kimesらと会います。それ以降の幾度かのインタビューに基づき、このSCBの記事が書かれました。Muirとの出会いについては、SCBの方がやや詳しく書かれています。Oaklandに着いたときに、Sierra Clubのメンバーが馬車で迎えに来て、6時間かけてMartinezに着きました。Muirの脚下にひざまづいたときには、涙したようです。また”Travels in Alaska”を執筆中の２階の勉強部屋へも案内してもらいます。そこにはヨセミテ渓谷の大きな絵[註：多分Keithの絵]と、Emersonのポートレイトが掛かっていたこと、また机の上には大きな聖書が載っていたそうです。また”Cruise of the Corwin”以来のMuirの友人である船長のHooperが夕食時にMuir邸を訪れ、たまたま船員（キャビンボーイ）を探している話になり、Muirが”Take Ryozo! He should see Alaska”と言いました[註：それがアラスカ旅行（1915年−1918年）のきっかけとなりました]。1977年に東は、自然保護やMuirの伝記「自然保護の父ジョン・ミュア」の功績を認められ、Sierra Clubの生涯名誉会員となりました。東は、アメリカ大陸(西部）で140峰以上を登り、アラスカへも9度訪問しました。

Kimesの本より：
東は、”Stickeen”を訳して雑誌に投稿したそうです。しかし、本人ですらその雑誌を、所有していなかったそうです。また”Travels in Alaskaは、東京大学のIto教授に貸され、それから戸伏の手に渡り訳されたそうです。東によると、訳の出来はかなりすばらしかったとのこと（1942年出版、3,000部刷）。

[4.10] 東良三(著)「自然保護の父ジョンミュア： The Life of John Muir」について

本のタイトルは「自然保護の父ジョンミュア： The Life of John Muir」で、昭和47年に山と渓谷社から出版されました。東は1970年に国立公園協会主催のカナダ・アメリカ国立公園視察団に参加、その道中、理事長の「千家哲鷹」氏にミュア伝の執筆を勧められたのが著作のきっかけになったと書いています。『およそ自然を愛し、山に憧れ、国立公園の秀麗な風光に思いを馳せ、自然保護に心を傾ける人ならば、ジョン・ミュア(John Muir 1838-1914)の名と、その偉業のあらましを知っておかねばなりません。』という出だしで本は書き始められています。内容は年代順に書かれており、青春時代のミュア、未開のカリフォルニアへ、秘境ヨセミテの探査、原始自然の中で、アラスカ氷河探検、未知の大自然を求めて、自然保護の第一人者、世界諸国への旅、大自然人の終焉と9章構成になっています。また巻末にはミュアウッズ国家記念物、氷河湾国家記念物、国立ジョン・ミュア史跡地、ミュアの著書と参考資料、ジョン・ミュア略年譜が付いています。
「自然保護」がタイトルに入っていますが、意外にもMuirの自然保護運動については、あまり書かれていませんでした。東本人は、『本書は、七十六年の全生涯を自然探求に捧げ、極度の清貧簡素の生活をつづけながらも、前世紀のアメリカの未開時代に、早くも次々に前人未到の原始境を踏破し、その崇高な美の世界を私たち後人に伝えた、世にも稀な非凡の自然人、ジョンミュアの数奇な探検一代記である』と本を位置づけています。このタイトルと内容のミスマッチは、原稿のタイトルが『自然界の聖者　ジョンミュアの生涯』であったことから、出版時に変えられたものと思われます。Muirのことのみならず、ヨセミテ、セコイア、キングス・キャニオン国立公園の情報、カリフォルニアの探査歴史、当時の日本政府要人らのカリフォルニア訪問などが面白く取り混ぜられています。さてMuir本人に関する記述ですが、大まかには正しいものの、かなりの誤記、勘違いも見受けられました（例えばヨセミテに関しては：1869年夏の記述、Muirの氷河説が認められたこと、Hetch Hetchy渓谷を高原と記述、Mt. Whitney初登頂、ダム問題に関してのルーズベルト大統領の立場、ヨセミテ国立公園の境界の変遷の経緯、公園へ自動車を乗り入れることへの意見など）。内容と巻末の文献リストから判断して、Badeの”The Life and Letters of John Muir”(1923)、”Letters to a Friend”(1915)、Muirの主要著作に頼って書かれているように見受けられました。Wolfeの本は読んでいないようです。細かいところはさておき、私個人としては、Muir邸を訪ねた唯一の日本人（たぶん）の東が、どうMuirを捉えようとしたかに興味を覚え、楽みながら読むことが出来ました。本書は『どうか、この書が、国土を愛し、その自然に親しみ、わが国立公園と国定公園に包含されているといなとを問わず、あらゆる日本の秀麗な景観の永久保存に心を寄せるすべての人々に、善意にもとづくなんらかの示唆をあたえることができますように…。』と結ばれています。

原稿最初のページ。『野の聖者』というのは凄い命名です。本では序章に当たりますが、この副題は除外されています。

原稿では、英文の引用がかなりあります。残念ながら出版の段階で除外されたようです。また原稿と本との間で、年代や名称の違いが見受けられました。活字を組む際に間違いがあったと思われます。

[訂正]
西村さんから間違いの指摘をいただきました。
「（おそらく）Muirに会った唯一の日本人」ではなく「（おそらく）Muir邸を訪ねた唯一の日本人」でした。
Muirは世界旅行の際、日本を訪れています（1904年）。東はときのことを調べ、「Harper's weekly」(1905年)に掲載されたことを突き止めたと書いています(Kimesの本を調べましたが、そのような出版記録はありません)。また、横浜には「スワイン」夫妻という文通相手がいたとのこと。Muirが出した手紙（の訳）が掲載されており、「日本に言ってみたい」とのことが書かれています。Wolfeの本の300ページには、5月に長崎と横浜に立ち寄ったこと、昔Muirの抱いていた日本人移民へのイメージ（娘のHelenの回顧）が書かれています。

[4.11] John Muir Conference 2006

この学会(”John Muir Conference”)は、John Muir関連の資料の殆どが集まっているStocktonのUniv. of the Pacificで、3日にわたって行われました。初日はMuirが結婚後一生を過ごしたMartinezの家へのツアー（私は参加していません）、2、3日目が発表にあてがわれました。平均参加者数は80人といったところでした。スコットランドやフィンランドからも参加された方がいました（写真上、タータンチェックのキルトをはいています。壁にはKeithの絵が掛かっています）。スコットランド訛りでMuirのフレーズを話されると、なかなかすごいものを感じました。テーマは、Muirがアメリカ外で行った旅行や社会的影響に関するものでした。Muirの功績の簡単な紹介、スコットランドの生家（町）の紹介、そこで行われている現在の教育活動、Robert Burnsの詩がMuirに与えた影響、Muirが親友の画家Keithに与えた影響、カナダ生活時代に働いていた工場そばのMuirの小屋跡の調査、Muirの採集した植物サンプルの発見作業、スコットランドやインド、南米、アフリカなどに行ったときのルートの調査などといろいろな発表がありました。参加者は、大学の研究者・学生を始め、Sierra Club、Restore Hetch Hetchyといった保護団体のキーメンバーもいましたし、一般のMuirに興味のある人も多々見られました。司会のSwagerty教授は、Muirへの興味がグローバル化してきたことを指摘していました。アトラクションは、絵を含み、Keith、LeConte、Muirの資料がいくつか展示されたこと。Muirの義父が、娘Louie（Muirの妻）にピアノを弾かせてよく歌った曲（南北戦争時の北軍の歌）をUC Berkleyのライブラリから探し出し、ピアノの伴奏付きでみんなで歌ったこと、Muirの長女Wandaの家系であるHannaファミリーが自分のワイナリーのワインをふるまったことです。個人的な収穫だったのは、発表者であるBonnie Johanna Gisel女史（”Kindred & Related Spirits：The Letters of John Muir and Jeanne C. Carr”の著者）とRobert W. Righter氏（”The Battle Over Hetch Hetchy”の著者）と直接話ができて、本の記述に関して質問できたこと、ついでに持って行った本にサインをもらったことです（笑）。
ところで、発表者の一人Eber氏に声をかけられ、「東良三」について何か知らないかと尋ねられました。Sierra ClubのMuirの簡単な紹介文(日本語版のみ)には：「高名な登山家である東良三（あずま　りょうぞう）は、その青春期にミューアに深い感銘を受け、後の日本の国立公園創設者の一人になった。」とあります。氏曰く”東良三”は1914年にMartinezのMuir家を訪ねており、彼について調べたいとのことでした。氏の唯一の資料はSierra Club Bulletin 1979年 7/8月号のみでした。どなたが情報をご存知でしたらお教えください。

[4.12] カリフォルニア　25セントコインデザイン秘話

2002年6月、コイン収集家のBurke夫人は、カリフォルニアの25セントコインのデザイン公募があることを知り、夫のGarrett（グラフィックデザイナー）に応募を促しました。無理だろうと最初は乗り気ではありませんでしたが、2ヶ月後には参加を決意しました。ある日、Life誌（1962年10月19日号）の表紙写真のイメージをもとに、突然アイデアが閃き、30秒ほどで最初のスケッチが書き上げられました。8,300の応募は、2度の選考の後、5つに絞られ、新知事になったばかりのシュワルツネッガーによってヨセミテ・Muirデザインが選ばれました。会場を一番沸かした裏話は、[1]応募の前まで、ヨセミテに一度も行ったことがなかったこと、[2]最終選考に残った時点で、シュワルツネッガー知事に自薦のパンフレットを送り、それには”Governor Schwarzenegger, Imagine a force of nature almost as might as you”とメッセージをつけたこと、そして授賞式で、知事に会ったとき、駐車場のパーキングメーターが(25セント)コイン切れしており、罰金切符をもらったことでした。

気温はかなり下がっています。また、明日から嵐が来そうです。

白いSUVに要注意

帰りに、White Wolfの（閉じた）ゲートの前に駐車してあった白い大型SUVに気がつきました。
五分くらいすると、急速に追跡してくる同車をルームミラー内に発見。速度を落すと、車はすぐ後ろに
付き始めました。で、よく観察したところ：

1. 黒いドアミラーに、赤と青のライトが埋め込まれている。
2. カンガルーバンパーを付けている。
3. フロントグリルの中には赤青のライトが見えている。
4. ルーフには無線機のアンテナが立っている。

Turn aroundが出てきたので、早速道を譲り後から観察：

5.　ライセンスは○に入った’E'があった。
6. 超薄型LEDタイプの信号灯がルーフについていた（前方からはよく見えません）。
7.　ペイントは白のみ。何のロゴも無し。

前々から噂されていた、覆面パトカーとの接近遭遇でした。

偶然今日写真を撮りました。TMビジターセンター前にて。

せっかくの思いで写真を撮ったのですが、Yosemite Villageに行ったら多数見れました。
現在、Valleyでは、North Drive前工事により普段一般車が通れないビレッジ内道路が
一般に供用されていますが、その通り沿いにレンジャー詰所みたいな所が合って、
その前に覆面も含めパトロールカーが展示所の様にわんさか置かれていました。

あとPark Ranger Trafficとか書かれた赤いのもいます。

まだまだいけますHigh Sierra

期待（？）を裏切り、Tioga Roadはいまだオープン。山（10,000ft.以下）にはほとんど雪がありません。火事の煙も消え、人も少なく、トレイルの砂埃も無くなり、絶好のハイキングシーズンかも知れません。

第五章　ミューアを調べる資料について

John Muirの研究資料は、Univ. of the Pacificが作成したJohn Muir Paper(JMP)と呼ばれるマイクロフィルム（リール）が基本となりますが、限られた図書館でしか閲覧できず、我々一般にはアクセスしにくいものです。以下では、比較的購入・閲覧が可能な書籍についてまとめました。[5.1]はMuirもしくは関連する人の手紙、日記、本などをです。[5.2]はMuirに関して書かれた研究・解説書です。一冊でMuirのすべてをカバーする本はありません。[5.3]はMuirの生涯についてまとめた入門書です。これらの本は、資料の引用先がはっきりしておらず、読む際には注意が必要です。[5.4]は、Muir本人がメインではありませんが、有用な解説を含んだ研究書です。意外にも役立つのは、インターネット上で読めるMuir本人の著作です。本、手紙、主要な雑誌投稿記事のかなりのものが閲覧できます。[5.5][5.6]を参考にしてください。

ヨセミテ、シエラネバダに関するMuirの代表的著書といえば、”The Mountains of California”（1894年）、”Our National Parks"（1901年)、”My First Summer in The Sierra”(1911年)、”Yosemite”(1912年)です。これらの本は、他人に読ませるためにかかれたもので、今ひとつMuirの個性が伝わってきません。一方Muirの没後編纂された日記（Wolfe編纂）、手紙（Bade編纂）はMuirの実生活を深く知ることのできる、興味深い資料です。

「South of Yosemite - Selected Writing of John Muir」

Muirの文献を集めた本で、それらにわずかですが解説が加えられています。収められている資料のほとんどは、現在ネット上で読めます。それ以外のいくつかの貴重な収められています（たとえば「God's First Temple」）。

「Remembered Yesterdays」

ヨセミテ国立公園の設立運動や、Ｈetch Ｈetchy渓谷のダム化反対運動などに関わった、Century誌の編集者Robert Underwood Johnsonは、1923年に回顧録”Remembered Yesterdays”を出版しました。それには、1889年にSan Franciscoのホテルで初めてＭuirに会ったとき、共にYosemiteに出向き、Tuolumne MeadowsのSoda Springsで、国立公園設立の運動をする提案をしたこと、1890年に連邦議会での公園設立運動に関わった政治家たちのこと、その後アメリカに広まった森林保護の流れやHetch Hetchy問題に絡む、Roosevelt大統領やPinchot（Forest Service初代長官）との書簡のやり取り、Roosevelt本人から聞いたMuirとのヨセミテ旅行のことなどが書かれています。600ページとかなり厚い本ですが、上記に関連した部分は50ページ程度しかなく、あまりお買い得感はありませんが、Muirの個性や当時のワシントンの内情がうかがえる、貴重なMuir関連資料。

「Breaking New Ground」

森林局長官Gifford Pinchotの書いた自伝。Forest Commissionのメンバーとして、Muirと旅行したときのことがわずかだが触れられている。Hetchy-Hetchyに関しては全く書かれていない。

Ｍｕｉｒ像はすでにＢａｄｅやＷｏｌｆｅの本によって描かれているので、その二番煎じではなく、当時の時代背景などとあわせ、Ｍｕｉｒの新しい解釈をしたと書いています。Wolfe、Ｂａｄｅを読んだ後に読むと、かなり味わえます。最初の一冊としてはあまりお勧めできません。参考資料への解説が詳しく、それを読むだけでも楽しめます。

「The American Conservation Movement: John Muir and His Lagacy」

全400ページ強の本です。そのうち150ページほど（1−4章）が、Muir本人について書かれています（特に、Muirがヨセミテを去って、自然保護運動を徐々に始めて行くところ）。本の後半は、Muir没後の自然保護の流れについて書かれています。すべての引用文にはその出展が書かれています。Steven J. Holemsはこの本について"fo Muir's influence and legacy within the conservation movement, to Stephen Fox"と書いています（2003年版、Wolfeの本の序文の中で）。面白いことに、MuirとHutchings婦人との関係で、プラトニックを越える何かがあっただろうと書いています（MuirとElvira H.の関係については、いろいろ本で触れられています）。

Muirの一生を300ページ強にまとめています。1945年に初版が発行されたこの本は、ピューリッツアー賞を受賞しており、かなり引き込まれるように読んでしまう本です。しかしその反面、Steven J. Holmesによる寄せ書きでも指摘されているように、資料引用の不備、不正確もしくは想像に拠る描写などが所々に見られ、読む際にはかなり注意が必要です。ともあれ、Muirの一生をとりあえず知るという意味では、ポピュラーな一冊。

「John Muir; Apostle of Nature」

「Son of the Wilderness」(Wolfe)形式のMuir伝記。その後の研究や、資料も参考にして書かれているので、Wolfe本よりは客観的で広範囲な内容。特に探検・地学関連に詳しい。使った資料の説明は最後にあるものの、各引用文のソースが書かれていないのは残念。ところどころWolfeの本を不用意に引用しているのに注意。

National Geographicから出版された、Muirの伝記本。貴重なMuirのスケッチや日記の写真が、数々のすばらしい風景写真と共に掲載されています（写真は、Galen Rowellを含めいろいろな写真家のものを使用しています）。文量は意外と少ない。間違いが多いので注意（例えば「Range of Light」の章で、Mr.Delaneyがまったく登場せず、Billyと混同している。,第二キャンプをヨセミテ渓谷と勘違いしているような記述がされている）。コーヒーテーブルブックといった感じの本です。

Sierra Nevada全般の登山、探検の歴史を書いた本です。”John Muir and the Range of Light”という章で、Muirの登山記録が簡単にまとめています。絵がいくつか入って18ページと短いですが、山登りに（1869−1875）関しては、おそらく一番信頼できる文献です。FarquharはSierra Clubの会長でもありました。

「Sunset Limited
The Southern Pacific Railroad and the Development of the American West, 1850-1930」

California State University HaywardのRichard Orsi教授著の”Sunset Limited”が先日発刊されました。この本は当時、政治経済に多大な影響力を誇ったSouthern Pacific鉄道会社に関する研究をまとめた本です。資料も含め600ページとかなりボリュームのある本です。特に、ヨセミテがらみで興味を惹かれるのはその最終章”Conservation”です。Orsi氏の研究によると、1890年のヨセミテ国立公園設立の最大の貢献者は、通説になっているJohn MuirやRobert Underwood Johnsonの運動ではなく、並行して独立に行われていたSouthern Pacificと関わりのあったVandever議員やロビィストのZumwaltによる運動にあるとしています。そこには鉄道会社の自然保護(Wilderness Preservation、Conservationではない)への強い関心がありました。最近の専門書はこの説を、おおむね支持しているようです。

Hetch-Hetchyダム問題に関する専門書です。ダムに没する前のHetch-Hetchy Valleyの話(当然Muirがでてきます)、サンフランシスコの水問題、賛成派と反対派の論争、そして連邦議会での論議、建設の話などが、中立の立場で非常に詳しく書かれています。意外なことに、当時のダム化反対主派(Sierra Club)は、Hetch-Hetchy Valleyにホテルやレストラン等を作り、さらにはTuolumne Meadowsへと続く道路建設(Colby Brief)を考えていたそうです。貴重な数々の写真とともに、1世紀近く前の興味深い環境論争が伺えます。

William F. KimesとMaymie B. チェーン規制のサイン

Chain Control Signs

冬期にチェーン規制が出た際のサインについて解説がありましたので、掲載します。
R-1からR-3まで、３段階あります。
チェーン規制が出ているエリアでは最高速度は25マイル／時に規制されます。

「R-1」レベル
チェーンが必要。ただしスノータイヤもOK。（溝の深さ規定あり）
ロードサインは “AUTOS & PICKUPS SNOW TIRES OK”と出ます。

「R-2」レベル
チェーンが必要。スノータイヤを4輪に装着した4WD車はOK。（車両重量規定あり）
ロードサインは“4W DRIVE WITH SNOW TIRES OK”と出ます。

「R-3」レベル
４WD車も含め、例外なしにチェーンが必要。
ロードサインは“NO EXCEPTIONS”と出ます。

Chain Control Signs
Here is a reminder of what those chain control signs mean.
Remember the posted speed limit in the park is 25 mph when chain requirements are in effect. This speed limit overrides all higher posted limits within the chain control area. Road conditions may warrant speeds slower than what is posted, you must drive accordingly.

R-1 Chains are required − snow tread tires are allowed.
Park road signs will show “AUTOS & PICKUPS SNOW TIRES OK”. Snow tires must have a minimum tread depth of 6/32 of an inch to be legal.

R-2 Chains are required on all vehicles except four-wheel drive vehicles with snow tires on all four wheels. (This is for a four-wheel drive passenger vehicles with an unladen weight of 6500 pounds or less) Park road signs will show “4W DRIVE WITH SNOW TIRES OK”.

R-3 Chains are required − all vehicles − no exceptions. (Yes “all” means four-wheel drives too.) Park road signs will show “NO EXCEPTIONS”

Remember, State Law requires you to carry chains in your vehicle when entering an active chain control area. Tire traction devices can be link chain, cable chain and/or spider straps. WINTER DRIVING TIPS
Allow enough time. Get an early start, and allow plenty of time to reach your destination. Park roads, the Merced Canyon (Hwy 140) and Hwy 41 can be very icy, especially during December and January when the sun is at its southern-most point in the sky.

Slow down, a posted speed of 35 mph may be safe in dry, warm weather, but may be an invitation for trouble on snow and ice. Snow and ice make stopping distances much longer, so keep your seat belt buckled and leave more distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead, especially when approaching a stop sign (i.e., Sentinel Bridge). Bridge decks and shady spots can be icy when other areas are not. Remember to avoid sudden stops and quick direction changes.

Chain Control Areas: The speed limit on park roads, in chain control areas, is 25 mph. Signs (Black with white lettering) are posted at the start of chain control areas and supersedes all higher limit signs (White with black lettering). The law requires that you drive the speed that is safe for the current road conditions, which may mean driving slower than the posted 25 mph. Drive Safely! (R. Middlecamp - 11/17/05)

第七章　ミューア年表

1838年
4月21日：スコットランド、Dunbarで生まれる。
Muir家の家族構成は父Daniel Muir、母Anne、長女Margaret、次女Sarah、長男John Muir、次男David、三男Daniel,、三女(双子)Annie、Mary、五女（米国生まれ）Joanna。

1849年
内務省(Dept. of Interior)設立。

Muir家、アメリカに移住。グラスゴーを出航しニューヨークに到着。アルバニー、ミルウォーキーを経由してウイスコンシンのPortage付近に到る。
農場そばには湖があり、父DanielはFountain Lakeと命名。日曜の教会の帰りなどに、よく立ち寄って遊んだ。
15歳のころまでには、シェィクスピアやミルトンの本などを読んでいた。
父Danielは熱心なクリスチャンではあるものの、近所の家畜を食べた飼い犬を殺したり、思ったように働かない馬を殺そうとする事があった。またMuirに鞭を振るうことがあった（Muirの興味に対してはあまり理解を示していなかった）。

1857年
近くのHickory Hillへ移る。

新しい農場では、井戸掘りをしているときに、ガス中毒で一命を落としかける。
ある冬、父に夜に本を読むなといわれ。朝早起き（1時）して、読書をするようになる。そのころから時計仕掛けの早起きベッドや、温度計などといった発明をする。

1860年
隣人（William Duncan）に薦められ、Madisonで行われたState Fairに発明品を出展し受賞する（父Danielは旅行費用の援助を拒んだ）。Fairでは委員会メンバーのJeanne Carr(Ezra S. Carr教授夫人)と出会う。受賞をきっかけに、Prairie du Chienの町（ウィスコンシン川とミシシッピー川の交わる付近）での職を得る。宿泊先のホテル主の姪Emily Pelton(後にカリフォルニアに移住)と知り合う。

1861年
リンカーン、大統領に就任。
南北戦争始まる。

秋にはWisconsin大学に正式入学、2年半在籍。

1862年
農務省(Dept. of Agriculture)設立。
Homestead Act法。移住者が160エーカーの公有地を私有化できるようになる。

6月、友人のGriswoldに影響を受け、植物学を学びはじめる。
夏、Fountain Lake Farmですごす。

1863年
夏、学期が終わってからPrairie du Chien方面に、植物採集の旅行に出かける。
新学期(秋)には大学に戻らず、Fountain Lakeの義兄David Gallowayのもとで働き始める。

1864年
ヨセミテ州立公園案がリンカーンによってサインされる。
James M. Hutchingsヨセミテ渓谷に移る。
George Perkins Marshの「Man and Nature」が出版される。ヨーロッパを例に挙げ、森林の破壊が生態系にもたらす影響を指摘。

春、召集から逃れるため、カナダに向かう。結果として、Muir本人に召集令状は来なかった。
10月にはMeafordの町(ヒューロン湖の東Georgian Bay南端）に落ち着き、Troutの工場で働き始める。

1865年
南北戦争終結。

秋、カナダのMeafordでJeanne Carrから手紙を受け取り、以後文通が始まる。

1866年
3月1日(2月21日説もある)、Troutの工場が火事で焼け、作ったRake（熊手）をすべて失う。すぐカナダよりアメリカに戻り、インディアナポリスに移る（5月）。
Osgood & Smithという馬車の車輪やハブ等を製作する工場に職を得る。この工場でも発明の才覚を見せる。
Butler教授の手紙で、Merrill家（Miss. Catharine Merrill、Mrs. Moore、Ｍｅｒｒｉｌｌ Moore）に紹介される。
晩秋：Carrに、"The Calypso Borealis"というエッセイを送る。Butler教授(1869年ヨセミテ渓谷で再会)によりBoston Recoderに投稿される。
この年、初めてヨセミテについての記事を読む。

1867年
3月：Osgood工場での事故で、一時的に右目の視力を失う。一月後には、回復。
8月：ウィスコンシンの実家やCarrを訪ねた後、インディアナポリスに戻る。
9月：ケンタッキー、テネシー、ジョージアそしてフロリダへの徒歩旅行に出る（後に”A Thousand-Mile Walk to the Gulf”として出版）。
10月後半、フロリダ西海岸にあるCedar Keyに到着。マラリアにかかる。

1868年
E. Carr教授ウイスコンシン大学をやめる。
1月：キューバに向かう。南米行きの船が見つからず、ニューヨークに向かい、そこからパナマ運河経由でサンフランシスコを目指す。
3月28日（もしくは4月上旬）：サンフランシスコに船(Nebraska号)で到着。
4月：Chilwellと共にサンタクララバレー、Pacheco Pass、セントラルバレー、Coultervilleを越えて、ヨセミテ渓谷旅行に出かける。
5月：ヨセミテからの帰り、Snellingで仕事を見つけ働く。
晩秋：John Connelから羊飼いの仕事をもらい、HopetonとLa Grangeの間の丘陵地帯(Twenty Hill Hollow)で69年5月末まで働く。

1869年
E. Carr、夏にはUniv. of Californiaで、教授のポジションを得る。
6−9月：Delaneyに依頼され、ハイシエラで羊飼いの仕事を手伝う（1911年に”My First Summer in the Sierra”で出版）。
J. Carrがヨセミテを訪れ、Hutchingsのホテルに滞在するが、Muirには遭えなかった。MuirはButler教授に遭う。
9−11月：ハイシエラから戻った後、Delaneyの牧場でしばらく働く。
11月：ヨセミテ渓谷に行く。
12月：Hutchingsのホテルで雑役の仕事をする（以降73年末まで、ヨセミテ渓谷に住む）。

1870年
J. Carrのつてで、学識者などがヨセミテ渓谷にいるMuirを訪ね始まる。Yelverton女史(J. Carrと知り合い)がヨセミテに滞在、後にMuirらを題材とした”Zanita”を出版。
8月：LeConteらとハイシエラ（Tenaya Lake、Toulumne　Meadows、Mt. Dana、Bloody Canyon、Mono Lake）に10日の旅に出る。氷河に関して話し合う。
10月：Hutchingsに住んでいたキャビンを取り上げられる。ヨセミテ渓谷を離れ、71年の早春までLa GrangeのDelaneyの牧場で働く。

1871年
早春：Hutchingsに再雇用され、ヨセミテ渓谷に戻る。製材小屋の壁から張り出した、自分の部屋を作る。
5月：Emerson、J. Carrに薦められ、ヨセミテ渓谷を訪問時にMuirと会う。
8月：Hutchingsとの雇用関係が終わる。
8−9月：Cascade Creek, Yosemite Creek沿いを歩き回り、氷河の痕跡を探し回る。
9月： MITの学長Rankleをヨセミテ案内。
同月単独で、Ten Lakes Pass付近からTuolumne渓谷へ下降し探査する(1873年に”Explorations of the Great Tuolumne Canyon”で投稿)。

8月：Galen ClarkとともにMcClureとMt. Hoffmannの氷河に棒を立てる。
9月：同二人はHetch Hetchyから入り、Tolumne渓谷のゴルジ地帯(Muir Gorgeと後に命名）を遡行する。
9月-10月：Mt. Hoffmannを越え、Tuolumne渓谷に下降し、上流の探査をしHoffmannに戻る。すぐさまMt. McClureへ移動し、棒の動きを観察に行く。再びHoffmannを経由し、ヨセミテ渓谷に戻る。
10月：Keith（画家）らを連れてLyell渓谷の奥に行く。単独Donohue Passを越えてMt. Ritterへの初登頂をする。次にLe Conte、Merrill Mooreをつれ、Clouds Restを登山、Mono Lakeに抜ける。
12月：オークランドへの短い旅行の後、Tenaya渓谷を遡行(”A Geologist's Winter Walk”)、その後すぐClouds Restに登る。”Living Glaciers”が掲載される。

1873年
Timber Culture Act.成立。名目とは異なり、家畜業者による土地取得を促してしまう。
American Association for the Advancement of Scienceが水系保護の必要性を訴えはじめる。

3月：”The Hetch Hetchy Valley”掲載。
4月：”A Geologist's Winter Walk”掲載。
6月：Mt. Lyellにガイドとして登山。
7月：”Hetch Hetch Valley”掲載。Keith、Kellogg、J. Carrらと共にTuolumne渓谷の核心部を遡行する。
8月：5週間にわたりヨセミテの南・東側の単独探査を行う（Minarettを東に越える、Ritter氷河の観察、Rodger Peak登山）。
”Exploration of The Great Tuolumne Canyon”掲載される
9月：　Clarkらとシエラ中南部への長期旅行に出る。Kings Canyonに入り、東に越え、Owens Valleyを南下、Mt. Whitneyを南から目指すが失敗。数日後、東壁から初登頂をはたす。Mono Lakeを経由してヨセミテ渓谷に戻る。
10月23日：J. CarrはLouie Strentzelに手紙を書き、Muirのことについて書く。
晩秋： ヨセミテを去ってOaklandに移り、以降10ヶ月近い執筆活動が始まる、記事は1874年の春から次の年にかけて、”Studies in ｔhe Sierra”として連載される。

父Danielは、家族のもとを去る。

1874年
E. Carr、Univ. of Californiaでの教職を辞す。
夏：Carr宅で、Muir(36)とLouie Strentzel(27)初めて会う。二度目に遭うのは3年後。
秋：Hutchingsー家、ヨセミテでのホテル業をやめ、サンフランシスコに移る。後にElvira HutchingsはJames Hutchingsと離婚する。
秋：オークランドでの執筆活動を終えた後、TurlockからLa Grangeを経由、ヨセミテ渓谷を再訪する。Shadow Lakeでキャンプの後、Mono側にぬけ、Lake tahoeを経由、Mt. Shasta方面へと向かう。登頂に成功の後、さらに北のModoc地方を訪ねる。12月にはKnoxvilleのEmily Peltonを訪ねる。

1875年
2月：オークランドに戻る。
4月：Shastaに2回登頂。2度目の下山時に遭難しかかる。
6月：Keith、Swett、McChesneyらと共にMonoトレイルを使い、Tenaya Lake、Tuolumne Meadowsを経由してMono Lake方面へ行く。
7月：Charles Washburn、George Baylay、そしてロバの面倒見役の"Buckskin Bill"と連れ立って、Kings Canyon方面への二度目の旅行に出かける。Whitneyの再登頂。
8−10月：南シエラへの単独探査旅行をし、セコイアの群生を探し求める。

1876年

農務省内に、Division of Forestryが設立。Houghが就任。ただ、管理する土地はなく、木に関するアドバイスなどが主要な仕事。
John F. Miller、Sequoia・Kings国立公園の設立を試みるが、廃案となる。

3月：長女Wandaが生まれる。
5月：三度目のアラスカ旅行に出かける（後に”The Cruise of the Corwin"として出版）。

Theodore Rooseveltを中心に、「The Boone and Crokett Club」が成立。アウトドアーの好きな上流階級者のクラブ：Harrsion大統領、Cleavland大統領、内務省長官Norble、Schurz、森林官Fernow、Pinchotなどもメンバーに含まれていた。

7月：KeithとともにMt. Shasta付近を経由して、Cascade山群方面へと行く。Mt. Rainierを登る。
8月：LouieはMuirに手紙を書き、著作に戻ることを薦める。

1889年
6月：Century誌のR, U. Johnsonが仕事を依頼するためMuirを訪ねる。その後二人はヨセミテに行き、
Tuolumne Meadowsで、ヨセミテ国立公園設立運動の話をする。MuirはCentury誌に、2本記事を書く約束をする。

1890年
セコイア国立公園、ヨセミテ国立公園、General Grant国立公園（カリフォルニア州）設立。

3月：Vandever、ヨセミテ国立公園法案を提出。
6月14日：4度目のアラスカ旅行(”Travels in Alaska: part-II”)に出かけ9月に戻る。
8月、9月：Muirの書いた記事がCentury誌に掲載される。
9月：Johnson(Muiｒ)の提案するVandever修正案は廃案になりかかっていたが、Southern Pacific RailwayのZumwaltのロビー活動によって、新修正案が議会を通過、Harrison大統領によりサインされる（10月1日）。これによりヨセミテ渓谷とマリポサグローブを除く、ヨセミテ国立公園が成立することになる。同じころ、セコイア国立公園も成立。1916年にNational Park Serviceができるまで、騎兵隊が保護管理を行う。Vandeverは法案に関してJohnsonらとの関係があったことをを否定。

1891年
3月：Forest Reserve Act(Enabling Act)成立。大統領がその権限で森林保留区(Forest Reserve)を設定できるようになる。区はすべて内務省の管轄下におかれる。

春：Muir兄弟の長女Maggieが夫John Reidと共にMartinezに移ってくる。以後Muirの代わりに農園経営の面倒をみる。
6月：Kings Canyonへの調査旅行に出かける。
11月：Century誌に、Kings Canyonについて書いた”The Rival of the Yosemite”が掲載される。

1892年
Casa Grande National Monument（Arizona州）設立。

5月：シエラクラブの設立に参加、初代会長に選ばれる。1914年に没するまで、会長を務める。

1893年
Cleavland政権誕生。すでに前政権によって13Mエーカーの保護区が設立されていた。その後Cleavlendは明確な保護手段が規定されなければ必要ないとして、５Mエーカーの保安区を指定するにとどめる。

このころシエラクラブは、ヨセミテ国立公園の境界を縮小しようとするCaminetti法案を阻止する。
5月：東海岸へ行き、Johnson、Charles S. Sargent（植物学、Harvard大学）、John Burroughs（作家、ナチュラリスト）などと会う。また、Emerson、Thoreauゆかりの地を訪ねる。
6月：ヨーロッパ旅行に出かける。

1894年
過去に出版した雑誌記事を加筆修正して、”The Mountains of California”を出版する。Muir最初の本となる。

1895年
Century誌２月号の特集(”A Plan to save the Forests”)に投稿。他の投稿者はSargent、Roosevelt(後の大統領)、Pinchot、Fernow、Olmstedなど。Muirは羊の害や、軍による管理を訴えている。
Tuolumne渓谷を単独で下る。途中Lukensに出会い、Hetch Hetchy渓谷で再び過ごした後、Tuolumne Meadowsに行き、周辺の山を登る。その後ヨセミテ渓谷に行き、住んでいた小屋を訪ねる。9月12日Johnsonに手紙を送り、公園の状況を報告。
11月23日：シエラクラブの会合で”The National Parks and Forest Reservations”を講演。1890年ヨセミテ国立公園設立の時のこと、軍によるヨセミテの管理が羊による被害を緩和してきたこと、最初ヨセミテに行ったときのことなどについて述べる。

1896年
National Academy of Scienceの推薦で、National Forest Commissionが設立。森林の調査と管理方針を作成することが主目的。当初Fernowは反対した。メンバーはSargentを委員長とし、他はW. Brewer(元Whitney Surveyメンバー)、H. Abbot、A. Hague、A. AgassizそしてG. Pinchot。

6月：Annie G. Muir(母)が没する。Harvard大学、Muirに名誉学位を授与する。
7月：シカゴでNational Forest Commissionメンバーに非公式で加わり、森林（サウスダコタ、オレゴン、カリフォルニア、アリゾナ等）の視察旅行に出かける。途中7月に、アラスカへの短い旅行（5度目）をする。

1897年
3月：クリーブランド大統領は任期終了直前に大統領令を出して、21Ｍエーカーの森林を保安区とした。これを廃案にする動きがあったが、大統領は拒否権を発動し、ホワイトハウスを去る。
5月：Pinchotが反対してもめたものの、最終的にNational Forest Commissionの報告書がまとまる。
6月：McKinley新政権の下、Forest Management Act(Organic Act)が成立。Foreset Reserve設立の目的、管理、水系の保護、必要に応じて伐採された木の販売などを規定する。またカリフォルニアなどを除く保留区の指定を1898年まで延期する。

7月：”Forest Reservations ans National Parks”をHarper's Weekly誌に掲載。

夏：MerriamらとLake TahoeからTruckee、Carson、Mokelumne、Stanislaus、Calaveras、Walkerを越えヨセミテに行く。森林や動物の調査をした。

Harrimaｎ、Southern Pacific Railwayも掌握する。
The Right of Way Act(H.R. 11973)が通り、内務省長官の権限で、国立公園内にダムなどを建設できるようになる。
9月：Ｍｃｋｉｎｌｅｙ大統領が暗殺され、Theodore Roosevelt(TR)が急遽大統領となる。

Atlantic Monthly誌の投稿をもとに、”Our National Parks”を出版。
7月：Tuolumne Meadowsで行われたシエラクラブ最初のアウティングに参加。

1902年
Crater Lake National Park（オレゴン州）設立。

1月：出版社に1−2年後にだす本の構想について書き送る（実際に次の本が出たのは1909年）。
夏：Kings Canyonでのシエラクラブアウティングに参加。その後Kern River方面の探査。

1903年
5月：TRと共に、ヨセミテでキャンプをする。その後すぐ、一年近くに及ぶ世界旅行に出かける。出発直前にHarrimanが、旅行のサポートを引き受ける。
12月：J. Carr没する。

1904年
Sullys Hill国立公園設立(North Dakota州)。後にNational Game Preserve。
選挙運動をめぐり、TRとHarrimanの関係にひびが入る。
議会は内務省長官のHitchcockに対して、ヨセミテの境界を見直すようにと指示、年末には報告書が提出される。
5月：世界旅行から戻る。

1905年
農務省にForest Serviceが設立。初代局長としてG. Pinchotが就任。内務省管轄であった森林保安区(Forest Reserve)はNational Forestと改名、以降Forest Serviceの管轄になる。

1月：Colbyに指示し、ヨセミテ渓谷返還法案の作成に取り掛かる。
2月：ヨセミテの境界を変更・縮小する法案(H.R. 17345)が通る。また、ほぼ時を同じくして、カリフォル二アではシエラクラブ原案によるヨセミテ渓谷返還の案が通過(Muirの要請でHarrimanが州議会に影響をあたえた)、直ちに連邦での法案通過へと動き始める。しかし会期末日だったので、合同案(S.J.R. 115)の形で予算だけを通す。それに応じ、騎兵隊は本部をWawonaからヨセミテ渓谷に移そうとしたが、州の運営委員会の抵抗で延期となる。

3月：娘Helenとアリゾナ旅行
8月：妻Louie Strentzel没する。
年末：ヨセミテ渓谷正式返還のための法案(H.J.R. 14)が下院に提出される。　

1906年
The Antiquities Act成立。

若干の土地境界の修正をした法案(H.J.R. 77)が下院に提出される。Muiｒは更にHarrimanに援助を求め、最終的には法案(H.R. 118)となり上下院を通過し、6月11日の大統領TRのサインにこぎつけた。
4月：サンフランシスコ大地震がおきる。水不足が被害を拡大。
5月：Pinchotはダム建設をサポートする旨を表明する。

1907年
10月：Keithと共にＨetch Ｈetchyで一週間ほど過ごす。

1908年
4月：TRにＨetch Ｈetchyを救う嘆願の手紙を出す。
5月：TRからの再考をうながす手紙をうけとったものの、内務省長官Garfieldは5月11日に条件付でHetch Hetchyへのダム建設を許可した。
5月：PinchotはConservation ConferrenceをWhite Houseで開催、州知事が呼ばれる。しかしSargent、前内務省長官Norble、Fernow、Muirらは招待されなかった。Johnsonはプレスとして参加できた。これにより、森林資源の有効利用を全州に広めようとした。
7月：南シエラ、Kern RiverへのSierra Club Outingに参加。
8月：オレゴンのHarriman邸を訪ねる。このとき、自伝”The Story of My Boyhood”を書く話が持ち上がる。

1909年
2月：アリゾナへ旅行。
3月：Taft政権が誕生。新内務省長官にR. Ballingerが選ばれる。
4月：ヨセミテ渓谷へ旅行。
秋：Harriman没する。
7月：Sierra Club outingでヨセミテに行く。
10月：Ｔａｆｔ大統領のヨセミテ旅行に同行。一緒に４マイルトレイルを下る。同月、Taft大統領は内務省長官ともめていたPinchotを解雇。
”Stickeen”を出版。

1910年
数日ほど、H. F. Osborn一家と共にヨセミテに行く（Sargentによると：三月末）。
10月：Taft大統領はHetch Hetchy計画を見直すための調査を指示。

1911年
親友のKeith没する。

3月：内務省長官Ballingerは健康上の理由で辞任し、Fisherが後を継ぐ。
”Let Everyone Help to Save the Famous Hetch Hetchy Valley…”と言うタイトルのパンフレットを書く。
”My First Summer in The Sierra”出版。
8月：南アメリカとアフリカ旅行に出かける。

1912年
”The Yosemite”出版。

3月：旅行からニューヨークに戻る。
7月：Los Angelesよりヨセミテに来る。
10月：最後のヨセミテ。National Park Conferenceに参加。公園へ車を入れるべきかについて話し合う。

1913年
3月：Fisherは以降、Hetch Hetchy問題に関しては連邦議会の許可が必要であると表明。
同月、Wilson政権が誕生。内務省長官としてLaneが就任。
5月：Univ. of Californiaより名誉博士号を賞与される。
9月：183対43で、Hetch Hetchyダム化案(Raker法案)が下院を通過。
12月：上院では43対25でRaker法案が通過、大統領のサインを経て、Ｈetch Hetchyへのダム建設が許可される。
”The Story of My Boyhood and Youth”出版。

1914年
12月：Los Angelsの病院で没する。

1915年：
The National Park Act成立。これにより内務省にNational Park Serviceが設立。初代局長はMather。
”Travels in Alaska”がMrs. Marson Randall Parson(Muirの秘書)により出版される。
1916年：
”A Thousand Mile Walk to the Gulf”がBadeにより編纂・出版される。
1917年：
”The Cruise of the Corwin”がBadeにより編纂・出版。
1918年：
”Steep Trails”がBadeにより編纂・出版。

Muirに直接関係のないと思われる歴史的事項に関しては、イタリックを使用しました。

Mariposa Grove

マリポサグローブのトラムツアー、ワワナ〜マリポサグローブのシャトルバスのサービスが今シーズンの営業を終了しました。マリポサグローブのギフトショップはまだ営業しているようです。
そしてマリポサグローブへの道路は最初の大きな降雪までは開いているということです。

The Mariposa Grove tram tours and the free Wawona shuttle bus service have ended for the season. The gift shop at the Mariposa Grove is open until further notice. The Mariposa Grove Road will remain open until the first major snow storm. (M. Brindeiro - 11/14/05)

Lee ViningのTioga Gas Martは今年もすでに冬期閉鎖で再オープンはApr-28-2006とのことでした。(張り紙されてます)
シェフはもうすでにバハマでしょうか。

熊缶の開け方を学習した熊!?

最近G社の熊缶に関するNEWSがKings Canyon NP方面から入ってきました。
開け方を学んだ熊がいるようです。私も9月に、Yosemite（Big Oak Flat Wilderness Station）で
同様な注意をされました（この製品私も使っていますが…）。　そういえば熊技の話でも盛り上がったことを覚えています。

”On my September JMT hike, I was cautioned by the Kings Canyon rangers that a bear in the Rae Lakes/Vidette Meadow area had learned how to break into the 「製品名」 canister and had actually done so a number of times. I find it difficult to believe since I have some trouble getting it open myself! However, we dutifully put our canisters in the bear boxes at Arrowhead Lake and upper Vidette as we passed through.” from DC

”I talked to a Kings County Ranger and friend at the FS Centennial. Their feeling is it is one bear that has learned the trick of opening the 「製品名」. They theorize that the bear grips the vault and gives it a hard twist. Smart bear. If you apply the 100 monkey theory to the bears, there goes the usefulness of the vault. All the more reason to keep a constant vigual in keeping our food away from all wild critters.”　from BD.

”I recently talked to a Kings Canyon ranger who mentioned this problem. To open the cannister, the top must be depressed and unscrewed, like certain childproof medicine containers. Some bears have figured out they can bounce up and down on the cannister and thereby loosen the top. After a while, the top will unscrew from this action and come off. ” from BM

Chinese Camp の民家

120号ルートでYosemiteに向かうと、Oakdaleの町を過ぎて108号Sonora方面と分岐した先にChinese Campという小さな町があります。120号沿いにも数軒の民家が並んでいて、そのうちの一軒は庭先に着せ替え人形を置いて通行者を楽しませてくれています。人形の衣装は時事ネタを反映したものが多く、大統領選挙時には候補者になったり、ボンズの量産ホームランが注目され始めたら彼になったり、スペースシャトル打ち上げ時には宇宙飛行士になったり、ほぼ毎週着替えています。上の写真は今年10月下旬のもので、ハロウィンを控えてウィッチに仮装しています。付近に停車する場所は無いので、今度はさて何になっているか、と予想しながら通りがてら鑑賞してください。線路を越えて材木置き場のすぐ先、ヨセミテ方向に向かって道路右手にあります。

キャンプ場営業終了

North Pines と Lower Pines　のキャンプ場の営業が先週末で終了しました。
あとは通年営業するUpper Pines,Camp 4, Wawona, Hodgdon Meadowの4つだけとなります。
