Northside Drive、落石のためクローズ

18日にヴァレー内のNorthside Drive（北側道路：通常は西行き一方通行）のCamp4の西方で崖崩れによる落石があり、現在道路は閉鎖中とのこと。かわりにSouthside Driveが両面通行になっているようです。

Northside Drive will remain closed until further notice due to the 12/18 rockfall. This closure may be in effect through
the Christmas holiday due to the predicted winter storm.The rockfall, located west of Camp 4, was first heard at around
1600 but anecdotal reports indicate that there was continued activity into the night. The area is currently being monitored
by park staff. Southside Drive will continue to be accessible for inbound and outbound traffic. Please call 209/372-0200

Badger Passスキー場が20日から今シーズンの営業をオープンします。
例年は3月末〜4月上旬の週末まで営業します。

Badger Pass is scheduled to open to the public commencing Thursday, December 20. Food Service opens at 8:00 a.
m.; Tickets, Rentals, Ski and Snowboard School, and Cross-Country 8:30 a.m.; Lifts and Sport Shop 9:00 a.m. For the

Tioga & Glaciar Point Road 雪のため冬季クローズになりました。
以後、120号線での公園横断はできませんので、ご注意ください。

Tioga & Glaciar Point Road いまだオープン

12月に入りましたが、Tioga Road と Glaciar Point Road がいまだにオープンしています。
1990年以降では、閉鎖日が12月になった年は1995年だけです。
（閉鎖後に降雪が少なく再オープンし、年末年始時期に通れた年が1年だけあります。）

Curry VillageのスケートリンクがOPENしています。

Yosemite’s Curry Village ice rink, one of the last remaining outdoor ice skating venues still operating in California,
officially opened for 2007-2008 winter season.
Daily skating sessions (subject to weather conditions) are offered from 3:30 to 6 p.m. and 7 to 9:30 p.m. weekdays. On
weekends and holidays, the rink is open for an additional morning session from 8:30 to 11 a.m., afternoon sessions from noon to 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 to 6 p.m., and an evening session from 7 to 9:30 p.m.
Ice-skating in Curry Village is $8.00 per adult, per session, and $6 per child. Skate rental is $3.00 per session. Helmets are available at no additional cost.

Hockey Program will be teaching basic ice-skating and hockey skills for the 2007-2008 winter season. You may sign up at any time by completing the Yosemite Winter Club and ISI applications.
Basic Skating lessons will be every Wednesday night 6-7 p.m. starting November 28, excluding holidays.

Those interested in taking Ice-Skating Lessons must be:
5 years old at the time of sign up - Be able to stand on skates - Be a member of the Ice Skating Institute (ISI) and the

Hockey players will also need to provide their own hockey skates and full face helmet for classes. Other gear may be
required as students advance. Those who completed last year’s Hockey Program can sign-up for Scrimmage Nights as
well: Tuesday and Friday nights 6-7 p.m. Starting November 27 and excluding December 18, 21, 25, 28 and January 1.

A reminder, the road to the Mariposa Grove from the South Entrance, will close after the first major snow fall of the

6月からヨセミテ・ミュージアムで開催されてきたチウラ・オバタ展が今週末で終了します。

Reminder!!! Last chance to enjoy Chiura Obata, Art of Yosemite in the Yosemite Museum. The exhibit is up through
October 21, 2007. This exhibit explores the work of the artists Chiura Obata (1885 - 1975) who first visited Yosemite in
1927, producing watercolors that led to a series of prints made by master woodblock artists in Japan. The show
extensively covers his earliest visits during 1927-1930, but includes works produced up to 1958. This exhibit displays
over 30 woodblock prints, sumi and watercolor paintings, sketches, a well as his actual paints, brushes, and artifacts. (M.

今シーズンのハーフドーム登頂は10月15日までと発表されました。

Little Yosemite Valley on Monday, October 15th and will dismantle the cables/poles on Tuesday October 16th. The trail
to the top of Half Dome will be closed at the base of the cables during the dismantling operation. For the safety of the
crew and public, if a major winter storm is forecasted prior to October 15th, the cables will be dismantled prior to the

Wawona Campground will return to first-come, first-serve status on Thursday, September 27, 2007. Sites will be
available by self-registration at the campground itself. Wawona Campground remains open year round, and will return to
advance reservation status on April 21, 2008. (The Wawona Group campsite remains on reservation year-round, while the

クレーンフラットのガソリンスタンド一時休止

公園内のクレーンフラットのガソリンスタンドが、機器交換のため9月10日〜10月15日の間、一時休止となります。
ヨセミテヴァレーからはEL Portalが最寄り（140号線で14マイル）となりますが、この時期クルマで訪問される方はガソリンのゲージをチェックの上、計画的に給油を実行してください。
以下に園内および周辺のガソリンスタンドの方面、距離を示しています。

Weekly Bear Activity

VALLEY：
The last few weeks we have seen bears out during the day eating apples at the orchards every day. There are bears in meadows, bears in berry bushes, and bears in the river. Most of these bears are doing natural things, but unfortunately many of these bears are eating apples or berries in the middle of parking lots or campgrounds. Also during the day, bears have been in picnic areas, attempting to scare visitors off their food. If a bear approaches you while picnicking, yell at it and make as much noise as possible to scare it away.

At night, we continue to see bears in all Valley Campgrounds. Bears have been very active breaking into cars at Yosemite Lodge, Camp 4, Curry Village, and the Ahwahnee. They are breaking for very little food, sometimes as little as a baby seat with food smashed into it. [Yosemite Lodge, Camp 4, Curry Village, and the Ahwahneeで熊の活動が活発。、また、かなり小さな食料が残っていても、熊は車を壊すようです。]

There are also bears active in Curry Village. They are obtaining trash from overflowing trash cans on a pretty regular basis. A bear also tore through an unoccupied tent cabin to obtain apples a visitor left inside. Remember to use your new bear locker and put all food and scented items inside 24 hours a day.

BACKCOUNTRY：
We are also getting reports from numerous backcountry locations, including Young Lakes, Glen Aulin, Little Yosemite Valley and Sunrise Creek on the JMT.

OTHER LOCATIONS：
Bears have been active at Tenaya Lake picnic area, again trying to scare visitors off their food. They have also been very active at Yosemite Creek and White Wolf Campgrounds.

Amazing bear fact：
A common question these days with bears in the orchard is, “Will the bear fall out of the tree?” The quick answer is no. Bears are excellent tree climbers. They are very agile and can easily spend a whole day in an apple tree, alternating between eating and sleeping. Bears also climb trees to get away from something they perceive as dangerous.

Colin Fletcher, March 1922-June 2007

Backpacker誌によると、Colin Fletcherが、6月12日Montereyの病院で亡くなられたそうです。85歳でした。氏は”The Thousand Mile Summer”、”The Complete Walker ”などで、米国に近代的バックパッキングを広めました。ご冥福をお祈りいたします。

Parsons Memorial Lodge Summer Series

Tuolumne MeadowsのSoda Springs近くに「Parsons Memorial Lodge」という石組みの小屋があります。
この建物は1915年にシエラクラブによって建てられたものです。
現在は夏の期間に行われる講演シリーズ「Parsons Memorial Lodge Summer Series」の会場として使われています。
この夏のプログラムをご案内します。
いずれも無料で、時間特記のないものは午後2時から約1時間のプログラムです。
クルマの方はTMビジターセンターもしくはランバートドーム下Pから徒歩になります。（所要時間20〜30分）

汗臭い足の匂い？ランの新種発表

　米国カリフォルニア州のヨセミテ国立公園だけに自生する、独特の匂いを放つランが新種であることが分かり、16日カリフォルニア州植物学会誌Madronoに発表された。
　研究者らの発表によると、「ヨセミテ湿地ラン」(Yosemite bog-orchid)と呼ばれるランは、正式名がPlatanthera yosemitensisで、夏の間6mm程度の小さな黄色い花をつけるが、授粉のために昆虫をひきつけるのはむしろ“汗臭い足”のような強烈な匂いだという。この植物は、ヨセミテ国立公園内の９カ所で見つかっていて、高度1830mから2740ｍ、水がわく湿地帯に自生している。このランが初めて採取された記録は1923年だったが、最近になって押し花収集が植物学者の手に渡り、カリフォルニア州内のどのランにも似ていなかったことから調査が始まり、今月になって新種と認められた。希少な植物であることから、自生する詳しい場所は公表されていない。
　ランは自然界で最も多くの種類を持つ植物で、世界で3万種ほどが見つかっている。

先週金曜、落雷により発生したInyo Complex Fireが鎮火に向かっています。しかしながら、東シエラの山々に向かう道路や、キャンプ地などが閉鎖していますので、出かける前にはチェックしてください。またいくつかのトレイルヘッドも閉鎖しています。

A lightning storm moved quickly through the Eastern Sierra Friday afternoon, July 6, 2007, igniting approximately 10 fires, which are being managed as the “Inyo Complex”. As of 8:00 am Saturday, July 7, 2007 the three largest fires still actively burning are the Oak Fire burning west and north of the Town of Independence and on both sides of US 395. The Seven Fire is burning west and north of the Town of Independence and the Sage Fire, which is burning in Big Pine Canyon. On July 7, 2007 Southern California Interagency Incident Management Team 3 assumed command of the fire and remain in unified command with CalFire.

On July 7, 2007 the western portion of the Town of Independence was evacuated for several hours (approx. 200 residents) as the town was immediately threatened. Approximately, 20 residents were evacuated to Statham Hall in Lone Pine, CA. The remainder of the evacuated residents sought refuge with friends and relatives in nearby towns and the Diaz Lake Area.

Firefighters continue to make excellent progress constructing containment line and mopping up hot spots especially, in the areas adjacent to the communities of Big Pine and Independence. Firefighters will continue to be vigilant and alert for new fire starts as thunderstorms and lightning are predicted.

Residents may continue to see smoke from this fire. Smoke impacts in the Eastern Sierra currently are mild. Fire apparatus traveling in and through communities and US 395 may impact residents and the traveling public.

Oak Creek Campground, Onion Valley, Baker Creek, Black Rock and Mt Whitney Fish Hatcheries all remain closed

Yosemite Valley Prescribed Fire Notification　：June 28, 2007
The National Park Service is planning to conduct prescribed fire activities in the Yosemite Valley area this week. Weather and air quality permitting, this burn will begin on June 28. Ignition should be completed within one day, with mop-up occurring on Friday to minimize smoke for the coming weekend.This project is 38 acres in size, located between Southside Drive and the Merced River, just north of the Bridalveil Fall parking lot.

ハーフドームで転落事故

NPSによるとハーフドームの頂上へのワイヤーケーブル部分で16日土曜日の午後に転落事故があったようです。
「のはら・ひろふみ」さんという日本人の方が亡くなられたようで、同行者が4名おられたようです。
詳細は不明ですが、ご冥福をお祈り申し上げます。

Hiker visiting from Japan falls to his death scaling Half Dome
A 37-year-old man died Saturday afternoon while hiking Half Dome in Yosemite National Park with four friends, a park spokeswoman said. Hirofumi Nohara of Japan fell about 300 feet to his death while hiking a section of the rock that is equipped with cables, spokeswoman Adrienne Freeman said Sunday. It's not clear why or how Nohara fell, Freeman said. Freeman said Nohara, who was in the United States on a work visa, was about two-thirds of the way up the cables, which line the last 400 feet to the summit. (FresnoBee - 6/18/07)

Tuolumne Meadowsnのキャンプ場がオープンしました。

Tuolumne Campground opened for the season June 11th. All sites are available on a first come first serve basis through July 14th. ▼小圃千浦 （おばた・ちうら/1885-1975 カリフォルニア大学バークレー校名誉教授）は戦前からヨセミテをはじめとするカリフォルニアの風景を日本画で描きつづけた画家である。
　千浦は仙台の出身。14歳で家出し東京で邨田丹陵（むらた・たんりょう）の弟子となり、若干17歳で日本美術院正会員になるが、1903年、18歳で単身渡米する。サンフランシスコで舞台美術や邦字紙のイラストなどで生計を立て、1927年ヨセミテへのスケッチ旅行で描いた作品展をきっかけにカリフォルニア大学バークレー校に美術部教授として迎えられる。
　1941年日米は開戦。西海岸では日系人11万人が敵性外国人と見なされ強制収容所へ送られた。千浦も家族とともに日系人収容所に送られるが、「いかなる状況下にあっても、教育は食糧同様に重要だ。なかでも芸術はもっとも建設的な教育だと信じる。」との信念のもとに美術学校を収容所内に創立する。ここではのべ600人もの人々が学び、多くの日系人アーティストを輩出したのである。
　戦後、千浦は大学に復職し、その後の人生は日本の自然と文化をアメリカに紹介することに捧げ、また毎年ヨセミテでのキャンプとスケッチを欠かさなかった。カリフォルニアの大いなる自然は千浦のアーティストとしての感性をさらに磨き、また生きる希望を与えたのである。

▼Kimi Kodani Hill（キミ・コダニ・ヒル）千浦の孫、バークレー在住。ヨセミテを描いた画集"Obata's Yosemite"の発刊に尽力し、そして戦時下の収容所生活時代を伝える "Topaz Moon" を自ら著して、千浦の辿った足跡を伝えつづけている。またヨセミテ国立公園をサポートするNPOであるYosemite Associationの理事をつとめている。

日米の架け橋となったアワビ漁師と画家
〜小谷源之助・仲治郎と小圃千浦の足跡をたどる〜

　1897年（明治30年）に房総からカリフォルニアに渡った小谷源之助・仲治郎兄弟と男あまたち。兄源之助はカリフォルニアでアワビ事業を開拓し、弟仲治郎は千倉に戻り、器械式潜水技術者を養成して人材供給を行った。兄弟のパートナーシップは大きな功績を果たしたが、その後カリフォルニアのアワビ漁は衰退し、戦争を経てそれぞれの家族は太平洋をはさんだまま暮らし続けることとなった。兄弟が渡米してから110年目にあたる今年、兄源之助の末子・ユージン氏とその娘キミさんが初めて南房総を訪れ、小谷家のルーツをたどる。
　同じ時代に渡米し、風光明媚なヨセミテ国立公園を描いて認められ、戦前からカリフォルニア大学バークレー校で教鞭をとり、名誉教授にまでなった日本人画家・小圃千浦（おばたちうら）。日米開戦後に移送されたタンフォラン日系人収容所内では美術学校を開き、多くの後進に夢と希望を与えた功績をもつ千浦は、ユージン氏の夫人ユリさんの実父である。源之助と千浦を祖父にもつキミさんは現在、ヨセミテ・アソシエーションの理事として、千浦の作品管理や講演などを行い、活躍している。ユージン氏とキミさんの来日に合わせて、お二人の協力のもと、源之助・仲治郎兄弟と千浦画伯の足跡をたどる記念講演を行う。

9日土曜日の未明、カリービレッジの上、Staircase Fallsの落ち口あたりから小規模な崖崩れがあったようです。

A small rockfall occurred at 2:53 am on Saturday, June 9 behind Curry Village. The release point for the rockfall was ~550 meters (1800 feet) above the Valley floor, at the top of Staircase Falls. A rock about 20 cubic meters in size (60 tons) fell down the path of Staircase Falls, sweeping additional debris down with it. Seventeen tent and hard-sided cabins in Curry Village are closed as a precautionary measure pending assessment. (N. Nicholas - 6/11/07)

Tuolumne Transportation Options - The Tuolumne Shuttle has begun operations for the Season. Service operates daily from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. The Tuolumne Tour and Hikers Bus has also begun operations for the year. Valley Visitor's can utilize this fee based service to travel from Yosemite Valley to Tuolumne and return the same day or stay over and return another day. The Bus Departs Yosemite Lodge at the Falls at 8:20 AM. The bus begins its return trip from Tuolumne Lodge at 2:05 PM. Chiura Obata, Art of Yosemite

Please join us for the opening reception of Chiura Obata, Art of Yosemite in the Yosemite Museum on June 8, 5:30 - 7:30. This exhibit explores the work of the artists Chiura Obata (1885 - 1975) who first visited Yosemite in 1927, producing watercolors that led to a series of prints made by master woodblock artists in Japan. The show extensively covers his earliest visits during 1927-1930, but includes works produced up to 1958. This exhibit displays over 30 woodblock prints, sumi and watercolor paintings, sketches, a well as his actual paints, brushes, and artifacts. The exhibit is open daily June 9 through October 21, 2007.

Andrew Skurka のGreat Western Loopチャレンジ

Andrew Skurka がＰＣＴ(Pacific Crest Trail)、ＣＤＴ(Continental Divide Trail)を含むGWT（全6,875マイル）に挑戦しています。200日で終える予定です。詳しくはこちら。氏は去年、ＰＣＴのカリフォルニア区間1,700マイルを45日で踏破しています（一日平均38マイル）。5月19日にはTuolumne Meadowsにいたようです。

南米チリの「トーレス・デル・パイネ国立公園」と姉妹公園提携

ヨセミテ国立公園は5月10日、チリの「Torres del Paine National Park（トーレス・デル・パイネ国立公園）」と姉妹国立公園提携の締結を行ったようです。今後、自然保護、職員研修、科学調査や環境教育など公園管理の全般において協力していくということです。

ヨセミテ国立公園は2006年5月に中国の「Huangshan National Park（黄山風景名勝区）」と姉妹公園提携を結んでいます。

Sister Parks Partnership between Torres del Paine and Yosemite
On May 10, a Sister Parks agreement was signed at the Chile's Foreign Ministry.

Representatives of Yosemite National Park and Chile's National Forest Corporation (CONAF) and Torres del Paine National Park signed on Thursday, May 10, a Sister Park agreement, promoting increased cooperation in the management of protected natural resources.

Chile's Foreign Affairs Ministry hosted the ceremony on Thursday, May 10, at 3:30 p.m. On behalf of the U.S. National Park Service, Yosemite Park Superintendent Michael Tollefson signed the accord. CONAF Executive Director Catalina Bau and CONAF's Magallanes Regional Director Juan José Romero signed for Chile. Chilean Minister of Agriculture Alvaro Rojas and U.S. Ambassador to Chile Craig Kelly witnessed to the accord.

The Yosemite and Torres del Paine partnership is the outcome of extensive collaboration between the U.S. National Park Service and CONAF. This partnership forms part of the framework of the U.S.-Chile Environmental Cooperation Agreement (June 2003).

Both National Parks have worked together promoting conservation, preservation of resources, park administration, and the management of cultural patrimony. The Sister Park agreement seeks to promote further cooperation, including information exchanges, personnel training, scientific research, visitor flow management, and education, among other issues.

The Torres del Paine and Yosemite National Parks are examples of scenic natural environments that United States and Chile wish to preserve. Although the two parks differ, they share common characteristics that bond them as partners. Refuges for unique animal and plant species, both parks have spectacular rock formations, extensive walking and climbing paths, and growing tourism as popular recreational sites. The two parks also face similar challenges and management concerns, such as limited resources, the pressures for development, endangered species, erosion of their pathways, and the impact of changing climate patterns.

The U.S. National Park Service has more than 30 Sister Park agreements between parks in the United States and counterparts worldwide. These partnerships have increased the exchange of information on successful practices and experiences. California's Yosemite Park has a similar agreement with the Huangshan National Park in China. Ski Conditions and Weather: The ski season is rapidly drawing to a close here at Tuolumne. Warm afternoon temperatures, lots of sun, and no new snow have combined to melt all the snow around the ranger station where we traditionally measure our snowpack. Therefore, the “base” here at Tuolumne is officially 0 inches. There is, however, still snow in many places such as the main portion of Tuolumne Meadows, the slopes and bowls near Elizabeth Lake, and the upper reaches of Lyell Canyon. All the snow bridges are gone in most places, so river and creek crossings are a problem unless you either use a footbridge or want to get wet. In many places you have to take your skis off to bypass areas of bare ground and then put them back on once you reach snow again. Highway 120 above the road closure gate outside of Lee Vining has been plowed to Tioga Pass, so skiers entering from the east side will have 8 miles of bare pavement to either walk or bicycle prior to reaching the snow. The gate at the bottom of the hill will probably not open until April 27, just in time for fishing season. Farther west along highway 120, you will have to walk the last two miles or so to Tuolumne Meadows, as the road has completely melted out. Skiers entering from the west side should be aware that the park begins their snow plowing operations from Crane Flat on April 16, so the snow line on the west end of highway 120 will be changing on a daily basis, and you may have to bypass snow removal equipment if you ski in on a weekday.

Mariposa Grove Road will open...

The Mariposa Grove Road will open to public motor vehicle traffic on Saturday, March 31, 2007 at 0800 hours. Due to excessive moisture in the road bed a weight restriction will be enforced. Vehicles weighting in excess of 7000 lbs. will not be allowed to drive on the Mariposa Grove Road until further notice. The Mariposa Grove DNC gift shop will also open on Saturday, March 31. (M. Ski Conditions and Weather: It has been a very warm and dry week here at Tuolumne Meadows. Our afternoon highs the past three days have been in the low to mid sixties, with overnight lows barely reaching the teens. We have had no new snow, and our base is down to only 31 inches of snow. This is the shallowest snowpack in nearly 20 years here at Tuolumne Meadows; not since 1988, when there was only 29 inches of settled snow, has there been less snow on the ground on this date. There are more and more spots of open water along the Tuolumne River, and it definitely feels like spring. Ski touring is still very good however, with a nice firm base in most places making travel very easy for the most part. The weather forecast shows the warm and dry weather to continue for at least the next week.

President Bush Proposes Budget Increase for National Parks

In his proposed budget last week, President Bush set aside $2.4 billion to help reverse chronic funding shortages in national parks. The money, a combination of public and private funds, would pay for a much needed increase in seasonal rangers and maintenance and construction. As part of this proposal, Yosemite could see as much as a 13% increase in funding over its 2006 budget.

2月1日のTM付近での積雪量は、平均の43%との事です。今年は（現時点では）かなりドライな冬のようです。

Park Rangers recently completed the February 1 snow surveys. Overall, the Tuolumne drainage has 43% of average water content while the Merced drainage has 41% of average. Depths ranged from 40 inches of snow at Grace Meadow (14 inches of water) to 17 inches of snow at Tuolumne Meadows (5 inches of water). This is the driest February 1 survey since the early 1990s. (M. 新キャンプ予約システム

新しい予約システムになるようです。下の表の見方は、例えばJune 15 - July 14の間の予約は、Feb. 15から受け付けられるということでしょうか。

On February 7, 2007, the National Park Reservation Service and the National Recreation Reservation Service (NRRS) will combine to provide enhanced reservation services in Yosemite National Park for both group and individual campsites. Campers will be able to use the www.recreation.gov website or contact the NRRS Call Center at 877/444-6777 to make reservations. All previous reservation phone numbers and websites will automatically redirect campers to the new system.
As before, reservations may be scheduled in Yosemite National Park five months prior to the date of arrival. The booking system is as follows:

Reservations made prior to the January 23, 2007 blackout will be migrated into the new system. Campers wishing to make changes to reservations made prior to January 23 will be able to do so after February 7.

Personal checks and money orders are no longer accepted for advance reservations. All payments must be made by credit card at the time the reservation is made. Additionally, reservations will no longer be accepted through the mail.

年間入園パス値上げ

Y.A.のメールマガジンによると、国立公園の年間入園パスが模様替えし、今年1月1日より値上げになった模様。
これまでNPS管理の国立公園、国立史跡等でのみ通用していた「National Parks Pass（年間50ドル）」は廃止され、「America the Beautiful Pass（年間80ドル）」として、NPSのほか、連邦政府機関が管理するサイトに入園できるようです。
しかし、それにしても実質的な値上げですよね。

Beginning January 1, 2007, the National Park Pass and the Golden Eagle Pass were discontinued and
replaced with new America the Beautiful passes. The passes provide access to and use of NPS, USDA FS, FWS, BLM and Reclamation sites which charge an entrance or standard fee for one annual fee. New
rates for the America the Beautiful Pass are $80 for 12 months and $10 for seniors.
