タイオガロードはクレーンフラットから15マイル。
グレイシャーポイントロードはすでに管理車両は通行しているようで、倒木処理などが行われています。こちらのほうは開通の日が近いのかもしれません。

Update on Glacier Point Road 4/24/08
Glacier Point Road is open to Administrative Traffic only.
The road is very icy due to current spring temperatures and is not sanded.
Wawona Road crews will be performing shoulder and road repairs as needed from Chinquapin to Glacier Point.
The gate at Chinquapin will be closed for administrative traffic only. ( Contact 460 before Admin. traffic entersroadway).
Forestry crews are presently removing hazard trees on the Glacier Point road starting at Chinquapin to Glacier Point.
Please watch out for Road crews, Sign Shop and Forestry crews on roadway drive slow and drive defensively. (T.Brochini - 4/24/08)

バジャーパススキー場は3月30日で営業終了

バジャーパススキー場は3月30日で営業終了です。
また４月13日まではスキー場パーキングまでアプローチできます。（クロスカントリースキー、スノーシューなどがまだ楽しめます）14日からはグレイシャーポイントロードの除雪作業のため、Chinquapinのゲート（Wawona roadとGP roadの分岐）がクローズとなります。

シエラの上を飛ぶ

３月７日、フィラデルフィアからサンフランシスコへのフライトでした。到着前３０分程のところで、シエラネヴァダ山脈の上空を飛びます。
窓際の席でなかったのが残念。

まだまだ雪がたっぷりです。

Tioga & Glaciar Point Road 雪のため冬季クローズになりました。
以後、120号線での公園横断はできませんので、ご注意ください。

12月に入りましたが、Tioga Road と Glaciar Point Road がいまだにオープンしています。
1990年以降では、閉鎖日が12月になった年は1995年だけです。
（閉鎖後に降雪が少なく再オープンし、年末年始時期に通れた年が1年だけあります。）

Curry VillageのスケートリンクOPEN

Curry VillageのスケートリンクがOPENしています。

Yosemite’s Curry Village ice rink, one of the last remaining outdoor ice skating venues still operating in California,
officially opened for 2007-2008 winter season.
Daily skating sessions (subject to weather conditions) are offered from 3:30 to 6 p.m. and 7 to 9:30 p.m. weekdays. On
weekends and holidays, the rink is open for an additional morning session from 8:30 to 11 a.m., afternoon sessions from noon to 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 to 6 p.m., and an evening session from 7 to 9:30 p.m.
Ice-skating in Curry Village is $8.00 per adult, per session, and $6 per child. Skate rental is $3.00 per session. Helmets are available at no additional cost.

Interested in learning the basic skills of ice skating and / or hockey? If so,The Yosemite Winter Club Ice Skating and
Hockey Program will be teaching basic ice-skating and hockey skills for the 2007-2008 winter season. You may sign up at any time by completing the Yosemite Winter Club and ISI applications.

Snowshoe Trek

昨日（現地時間3月17日／土曜日）、Yosemite Association（Y.A.）が主催するOutdoor Adventureの「DEWEY POINT SNOWSHOE TREK」に参加してきました。今回のヨセミテ行のハイライト！。Badger Passスキー場を起点に、ヨセミテヴァレーを見下ろすDewey Pointまでの往復8マイルの雪上ハイキングです。

ヨセミテヴァレーはもうすっかり春の訪れでしたが、クルマで約30分Badger Passまで上がるとさすがに「まだ冬」という感じです。スキー場も4/1まで営業。
午前9時にここでガイドのKarenさん、そして私を含めて4名の参加者が集合。スノーシューを借りて出発です。

トレイルにはまだ数十センチくらいの積雪がありました。結構アップダウンがあり、スノーシューでも「健脚」クラスのコースです。またクロスカントリースキーヤーもたくさん入山していました。
天気は快晴で、運動量もありますから、ジャケットもフリースも脱いでしまいました。Tシャツになっている人もいました。

途中、何度も樹木や植物の観察、それからKarenによる自然解説があります。彼女はヨセミテには16年在住。Yosemite Instituteのインストラクターや夏の間はシーズナルレンジャーをするなど、経験豊富なナチュラリストです。

午後1時ようやくDEWEY POINTに到着。ここはエルキャピタンの真正面で、また遠くにはマウント・ホフマン、マウント・コネス、クラークレンジの山々が雪を頂いた姿を望めました。天気も最高でした。

今回初めて冬のアクティビティに参加しましたが、ヴァレーとは全く別の世界が広がっていました。
スノーシューやクロスカントリースキーをつけてトレイルに入るだけで、木々の様子、鳥のさえずり、遠くに望む景色などさまざまな自然の姿に出会い、またそのなかに自分がいるということのすばらしさを実感できます。
冬のまっただ中だと寒さで辛い日もあることでしょうが、3月の穏やかな天候の日はこうした活動に最適だと思います。

Badger Pass SKI Area

12月ミドルのオープン予定の週には雪不足で開かず、その後も雪に恵まれず、
先週は嵐のため道路もスキー場自体も閉鎖だったBadger Passで、この土日、
ようやく今シーズンの初スキーをしてきました。雪の後の晴でコンディションは上々でした。

TIOGA & TUOLUMNE MEADOWS

TUOLUMNE MEADOWSは先月末から今月初めの雪で36インチ（約91センチ）の積雪があるようです。

TUOLUMNE MEADOWS - WINTER CONDITIONS UPDATE
December 2, 2005

WEATHER: from previous week
High temp: 37° (November 30)
Low temp: 5° (November 28)
New Snow: 43” (Nov 29, 30 & Dec 1)
Total settled snow depth: 36” (Dec 2)

SKI CONDITIONS: The door to the backcountry has been opened with several feet of heavy snow to cover many of the non-ski friendly objects.

AVALANCHE/SNOW CONDITIONS: (above 8000’) Avalanche danger is HIGH.

DISCUSSION: With 2-3 feet of new snow in the last 24 hours avalanche potential is always HIGH. The snow is very heavy (3.35” of water content in the last 32”of snow fall) so it should settle or set up quickly. The lingering and highest avalanche potential will be where few anchors (like trees and boulders) exist. In the Tuolumne area those anchorless slopes are bare granite slopes, in other areas they may be grass or scree slopes. Also be alert on north slopes, particularly above 9000’, where weeks old snow has developed a ground level depth hoar (evident as loosely bonded sugary snow). This depth hoar layer may haunt us for some time in the pockets where it is well developed. Be suspicious of depth hoar in those areas you’ve been eyeing for the last month waiting for just a little more snow coverage.
Our duties have transitioned quickly from the road to the snow so we have not had a chance to check out snow conditions as closely as we would like. Here are some sources for snow and weather conditions. www.csac.org ,through this site you can access the avalanche centers and information including the Truckee avalanche center and the Bardini foundation for the eastern Sierra. An exciting new site is www.esavalanche.org which is the EASTERN SIERRA AVALANCHE CENTER based out of Mammoth Lakes California. This is their first year of operation but their expertise and depth of information should make them the first stop for any backcountry users. They are a non-profit, membership and privately funded organization so we encourage you to check them out. If you like what you see make it your avalanche center. This is also a good time to remind you that the avalanche reports on the Tuolumne Update are based on our observations and limited to the ski radius of the Tuolumne area.

WILDLIFE: Once again it is easy to tell who our neighbors are as Pine Martins, Coyotes, Squirrels and others leave tracks of their whereabouts.

カリーヴィレッジのアイススケート場が今シーズンの営業を開始しました。

Weekday hours: 3:30p.m. − 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.
Weekend and Holiday hours: 8:30 a.m. - 11 a.m., 12 noon - 2:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m. − 6 p.m. and 7p.m. - 9:30 p.m.
Rates per session are: Adults $6.00.Children $5.00.Skate rentals $3.25

チェーン規制のサイン

Chain Control Signs

冬期にチェーン規制が出た際のサインについて解説がありましたので、掲載します。
R-1からR-3まで、３段階あります。
チェーン規制が出ているエリアでは最高速度は25マイル／時に規制されます。

「R-1」レベル
チェーンが必要。ただしスノータイヤもOK。（溝の深さ規定あり）
ロードサインは “AUTOS & PICKUPS SNOW TIRES OK”と出ます。

「R-2」レベル
チェーンが必要。スノータイヤを4輪に装着した4WD車はOK。（車両重量規定あり）
ロードサインは“4W DRIVE WITH SNOW TIRES OK”と出ます。

「R-3」レベル
４WD車も含め、例外なしにチェーンが必要。
ロードサインは“NO EXCEPTIONS”と出ます。

Chain Control Signs
Here is a reminder of what those chain control signs mean.
Remember the posted speed limit in the park is 25 mph when chain requirements are in effect. This speed limit overrides all higher posted limits within the chain control area. Road conditions may warrant speeds slower than what is posted, you must drive accordingly.

R-1 Chains are required − snow tread tires are allowed.
Park road signs will show “AUTOS & PICKUPS SNOW TIRES OK”. Snow tires must have a minimum tread depth of 6/32 of an inch to be legal.

R-2 Chains are required on all vehicles except four-wheel drive vehicles with snow tires on all four wheels. (This is for a four-wheel drive passenger vehicles with an unladen weight of 6500 pounds or less) Park road signs will show “4W DRIVE WITH SNOW TIRES OK”.

R-3 Chains are required − all vehicles − no exceptions. (Yes “all” means four-wheel drives too.) Park road signs will show “NO EXCEPTIONS”

Remember, State Law requires you to carry chains in your vehicle when entering an active chain control area. Tire traction devices can be link chain, cable chain and/or spider straps. WINTER DRIVING TIPS
Allow enough time. Get an early start, and allow plenty of time to reach your destination. Park roads, the Merced Canyon (Hwy 140) and Hwy 41 can be very icy, especially during December and January when the sun is at its southern-most point in the sky.

Slow down, a posted speed of 35 mph may be safe in dry, warm weather, but may be an invitation for trouble on snow and ice. Snow and ice make stopping distances much longer, so keep your seat belt buckled and leave more distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead, especially when approaching a stop sign (i.e., Sentinel Bridge). Bridge decks and shady spots can be icy when other areas are not. Remember to avoid sudden stops and quick direction changes.

Chain Control Areas: The speed limit on park roads, in chain control areas, is 25 mph. Signs (Black with white lettering) are posted at the start of chain control areas and supersedes all higher limit signs (White with black lettering). The law requires that you drive the speed that is safe for the current road conditions, which may mean driving slower than the posted 25 mph. Drive Safely! (R. Middlecamp - 11/17/05)

120号の状況

今週初めの嵐は、Big Oak Flat付近にもかなりの降雪をもたらしたようです。
料金所から先の120号には、滑り止め用の砂がかなりまかれています。
所々路面が濡れているので、気温が下がっているときの運転には注意が必要です。
このような感じの路面状況では、まずチエーン規制はありません。

冬の野生動物

NPSの"Daily Report"で従業員向けに冬の野生動物についての呼びかけが載っていました。
クマやリスが冬眠に入る一方で、冬でも活動的なコヨーテについての記述があります。
この冬は野生動物オフィスとヨセミテ・インスティテュート（Y.I.）が協力して、コヨーテの調査プログラムを行っているようです。ペイントマークのついたコヨーテを見かけたら知らせてほしいそうです。
野生動物にはくれぐれも餌をやったりしないようにしましょう。

As the fall months fade into winter, we begin seeing changes with park wildlife.? Black bears and ground squirrels are slowing down and will soon be headed to their dens to sleep away the winter months.? Some of the resident Valley female bears have already retreated to dens. Bears are still active in Valley campgrounds and El Portal. Sightings of bobcats become more common and we can only assume that with fewer visitors in the park, these shy animals are more willing to venture into open areas to hunt for small mammals and other prey.? Raccoons, ringtails, and spotted skunks often find relief from the cold weather in warm shelters − such as office buildings, garages, and attics.?

Coyotes also become more visible this time of year as they move to the roads for easier travel and to look for an easy food source − mainly roadkill.? Unfortunately, curious visitors often throw food to the coyotes from their car window, in an attempt to get a better look at the coyote or to take a close-up photo.?

The park is addressing this issue in several ways.? Next month, visitors will be given a Keep Wildlife Wild bookmark as they come through the entrance stations, reminding them to respect wildlife at a distance and that feeding wildlife is a violation of the law.? The portable radar trailer will continue to be used to remind visitors not to feed the wildlife and to drive the speed limit. ?The Wildlife Management Office will be marking coyotes with a paint spot, to better identify which animals are displaying begging behavior.? The Wildlife Office and the Yosemite Institute will be working together to monitor coyote abundance and behavior. ?This new program will begin in the next couple months and will involve students monitoring coyotes in the Valley.?
You can help Keep Wildlife Wild this winter by following these recommendations:
・ Take a walk around your office building and home to make sure there are no access points for raccoons, ringtails, and skunks to enter the structure.
・ Do not leave pet food outdoors or allow pets to roam freely.
・Make sure all food-related garbage is deposited in animal-resistant dumpsters.
・Stop and educate visitors if you see them approaching or feeding wildlife.
・Report any sightings of paint-marked coyotes to the Wildlife Office at 372-0476, including the date, time, location, paint color and behavior of the?coyote. (S. Lisius - 12/3/04)

XCスキー in Yosemite

夏の間は車がわがもの顔に走るGlacier Point Roadですが、12月も中旬になり
閉鎖された道路に雪が十分積もると、Badger Passスキー場前(写真１)
からXCスキーのコース(無料)としてオープンします。　週末ともなると、かなりの数
(Valleyと比べると閑散ですが)のＸＣスキー、スノーシュー
デイハイカーやバックパッカーが繰り出してきます。　

Glacier Point Roadはなだらかで圧雪されている(写真2)ので、XＣスキーは
初めてという方でも、楽しい入門体験ができることと思います。Yosemite XCスキーのガイドブック
としては、"Cross Country Skiing in Yosemite"(Tim Messick著、$9.95、
Yosemite Associationより購入可)がたいへん参考になります。Glacier Point Roadのみならず、Crane Flat、Tuolumne Meadows付近のルート情報があります。

[参考ルート　1]　ヨセミテバレーを覗き込める一番手近な所はDewey Point(写真３)です。　
Glacier Point Roadを1マイル強ほど進んだ後、「Dewey Point Meadow Trail 18 2.5Mile」
と書かれたサインに従って道を外れ、雪原となだらかな林の中を北上すると、突然崖っぷちに
到達します。往復８マイルほどのコースです。　

[参考ルート　2]　以前新聞に書いてありましたが、Glacier Pointへのチャレンジはかなり
ポピュラーになってきているようです。まさにHalf Domeハイキングの冬版といえるでしょう。
往復21マイルですが、高度差もあまり無いので、かなりのスピードで進むことができます。
上述ガイドブックによると片道４−６時間ぐらいが目安のようです。Glacier Point付近での
Half Domeを見ながらの滑降(写真４)はかなりエキサイティングです。勿論Glacier Point
からの景色のすばらしさは言うまでもありません。夏の売店は、この時期スキー小屋となり、
ツアーに申し込めば(www.yosemitepark.com)宿泊ができるようです。
注意：スノーシューでのGP日帰りツアーはかなり難しいと思います。
