エルキャピタンのDawn Wallルートがフリークライミングで完登

El Capitanの最難関といわれるDawn Wallルート。2015年1月14日、Tommy CaldwellとKevin Jorgesonが19日をかけてフリークライミングで完登しました。

エルキャピタン登攀記録が11/6更新されていました。2時間36分45秒だそうです。
「Climbers go up Yosemite's Nose to reset record」

エル・キャピタン最短登はん記録、再び更新

Hans Florine氏と平山ユージ氏が12日（日）、エル・キャピタン最短登はん記録を「2時間37分5秒」に更新しました。これは彼らが今年7月に打ち立てた「2時間43分33秒」を自ら短縮したものです。

Royal Robbins

30年以上前にできた、Royal Robbinsというアウトドアーのアパレルメーカーがあります。創始者であるRobbinsは1950年代から60年にかけて、Half Dome北西壁（1957年）、El Capitan Salathe壁（1961年）やNorth American壁(1964年)の初登攀を含め、ヨセミテ渓谷でのビッグウォールクライミングの黄金期に大活躍をしました。先日、氏のスライドショーを見る機会がありました。話はまず、MuirのCatherdral Peaｋの初登頂(1869年)から始まり、AndersonのHalf Dome初登頂（1875年）と続きます。そして、主題のヨセミテ渓谷での主要岩壁・岩峰の登攀史が、自分のクライミングも含め紹介されました。後半は、ヨーロッパやパタゴニアでのクライミングに軽く触れた後、筋を痛めて先鋭的なクライミングが出来なくなって70年代から始めた、カヤックによるシエラネバダの三大渓谷：San Joaquin、Kings、そしてKern Riverの下降の話でした。一番時間が割かれたのはHalf DomeとEl Capitaｎで、数々の信じられないようなスライドをみることが出来ました。El CapitanのNoseルート（1958年）を初登攀したWarren Harding（1924−2002）とは、そのクライミングに関する思想などの違いはあるものの、よい友達だったと話していました。7１歳とは思えないエネルギッシュなRobbinsでした。手はあまり大きくはありませんが、かなり厚みがありました。

1967年、妻のLizはRobbinsとHalf Dome北西壁を登り、女性最初の登攀者となります。これはそのときの記念写真で、このときアパレルメカーを始めようと思いついたそうです。

1968年の11月、Warren HardingとGalen RowelはHalf Domeの南壁（Little Yosemite側）の初登を目指していましたが、冬の嵐に捕まってしまいます。無線での救助依頼を受けたNPSは、Robbinsらをヘリコプターに載せてHalf Domeの頂上に下ろします（写真）。Robbinsはそこから下降し、二人を救助します。当時のことをRowellは次のように書いています：　
”The man on the rope was Royal Robbins, descending like a guardian angel to bring us hot soup, dry parkas and gloves, and lifeline to the summit. We started to warn up as we climbed the eight-hundered-foot rope with jumar ascenders, and by midnight we were on top in a spacious tent with dry cloths, warm drinks, and old friends.” - High and Wild: The South Face of Half Domeより。

Lembert Dome

Tuolumne Meadowsの東端にあるLembert Domeに登るルートには、
1.Lembert Dome駐車場からDog Lake方面に西北から回り込むオフィシャルトレイル
2.Tuolumne Lodge駐車場から登るオフィシャルトレイル
3.Lembert Dome駐車場からDome直下(北壁側)を登る旧トレイル(閉鎖・立入禁止中)
4.Rock Climbing各ルート
などがありますが、Lembert Dome駐車場などから岩肌を歩いて上り下りする事も不可能ではありません。
往復1.3マイル程度です。

最も傾斜がきつく難しいのは序盤の8800〜9000ft辺りの部分です。
東南方面にDomeを巻くようにルートをとります。
手を使わなくても上り下りは可能です。
靴はグリップの確実なものを使用しましょう。

Tom Frost is a major climbing figure from the 50s and 60s, contributed to gear design and climbing philosophy, helped Yvon Chouinard set up Patagonia, is in the Vertical Frontiers movie, is a well known American Alpine Club member, and worked with the Service to nominate Camp 4 to the National Register.? 先月の雪嵐にともなってEl Capitanに出動したレスキュー担当レンジャーのインタビュー記事がY.A.のサイトに出ています。

雪嵐で日本人クライマー遭難

BBSで話題になっていますが、今回の雪嵐でエルキャピタンを登攀中の日本人クライマー２名が遭難死したと報じられています。ご冥福をお祈りします。

Half Dome

つい先日、掲示板に登場した少年Climber: Scott君のニュースが、
今朝のSan Jose Mercury新聞にありました。

The sheer granite face of Half Dome towers 4,400 feet over Yosemite Valley
like a dare.　Climbers who accept that dare average three days to scale the
steep "Death Slabs'" and ascend Half Dome's Regular Northwest Face, the
route first conquered in 1957.　Scott Cory, 14, of Brentwood, bagged it
Thursday. Took him half the day. It was good training.　Tagged with
the nickname"Spider Boy'' for his feats on rock, Scott holds claim as
the youngest climber ever to achieve one-day summits of Half Dome and
"The Nose" of El Capitan. Now comes a more grueling challenge.
Later this year, he will attempt to tackle both routes within 24 hours
to become one of 15 people, and by far the youngest, to achieve
the storied "Yosemite Double..."　　　(中略)
On Thursday, Scott ended the Half Dome climb worn out -- not so much
from the seven-hour ascent of the granite wall, but from the seemingly
interminable three-hour hike down.

来年(2005)はHalf Dome初登頂から130年目に当ります。
"The first known non-indigenous man to conquer Half Dome was George
Anderson on Oct. 12, 1875."
